Transforming our response to crime through innovative solutions that ensure accountability, equity, and healing.
About us
Partnership for Safety and Justice is leading the way. We have developed an innovative and provocative model for criminal justice reform, one that engages survivors of crime, people convicted of crime, and the families of both. Together, we advance policy solutions to curb the unsustainable growth of our prison system, invest in programs that prevent crime, and promote healing for people harmed by crime and violence. Our groundbreaking approach has been adopted by groups across the country and continues to serve as a model for public safety reform solutions. To learn more, visit safetyandjustice.org.

Did you know? 🌹 In 2000, we launched a regional movement for criminal justice reform, uniting activists across OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, UT, and NV. Together, we set priorities, tackled challenges, and built collective power for meaningful change. 📸 This photo from 2000 shows a rally in Portland’s Pioneer Square with our ally partners, protesting Oregon’s extreme sentencing laws.

🌹 As we celebrate 25 years of impact, we honor the journey that began with Arwen Bird and crime survivors. 🌹 Founded in 1999 by Arwen Bird — an activist and crime survivor — the Survivors Advocating for an Effective System (SAFES) emerged in response to a criminal justice system that was more focused on punishment than on helping survivors like her heal and rebuild their lives. 🌹 Recognizing the critical need for an alternative voice, SAFES amplified the voices of survivors of crime and violence who sought a system focused on prevention rather than increased incarceration. They empowered survivors to advocate for better solutions centered on accountability, rehabilitation, and healing. 🌹 We're proud to continue advocating for effective solutions that center survivors of crime, people convicted of crime, and the families and communities of both. 🌹 Stay tuned as we continue to share our history and the work rooted in Partnership for Safety and Justice! #throwback #25years #25thanniversary

🌹 In honor of 25 years, we’re reflecting on our roots and vision. Founded in 1999 as the Western Prison Project by Brigette Sarabi — a lifelong activist, survivor of violent crime, and mother whose child had been recently incarcerated — our organization emerged from a deep commitment to accountability, justice, and healing. When Brigette tried to support her child’s path to accountability and repair the harm, she found that the system was designed to punish and isolate, not help and heal. She and a handful of community members and activists began organizing to advocate for criminal justice reform and support incarcerated people, including their loved ones. From there, the Western Prison Project was formed. 🌹 We're proud to continue building on this work and will share more about our history.

No matter who we are or where we live, we deserve access to addiction treatment and services. In just 3 weeks, Oregon’s new drug law led to 167 arrests for simple possession. Our community wants healing, not punishment. "Sen. Floyd Prozanski, D-Eugene and the committee’s co-chair, said he’s concerned that some counties are putting limits on who can enter deflection and people will enter the court system instead."
