The BLM is proposing to lease over 84,000 acres of public land in Wyoming for oil and gas development this December—many of these parcels overlap with critical wildlife habitat and low-development-value lands. Rocky Mountain Wild has identified major conservation conflicts, including sage-grouse habitat, migration corridors, and rare species ranges. An interactive map and comment resources are now available to help the public engage. Comments are due July 17. For over 20 years, Rocky Mountain Wild has led the charge to protect the biodiversity of our region.
About us
Our mission is to protect, connect, and restore wildlife and wildlands in the southern Rocky Mountain region. We envision a biologically healthy future for our region – one that includes a diversity of species and ecosystems, thriving populations of wildlife, and a sustainable coexistence between people and nature. Protecting biodiversity is a BIG job, and we know that we can’t do it alone. We are actively building a diverse community of educators, students, activists, philanthropists, and citizen scientists to help us make our vision a reality. From providing guidance on our board of directors to helping us collect data in the field, our community makes our work possible – and fun.

The Senate is advancing a proposal that would force the sale of at least two million acres of public lands over the next five years. Up to 250 million acres are eligible for sale—including places like Animas Mountain in Colorado. This budget reconciliation maneuver threatens not only iconic landscapes, but also critical wildlife habitat, roadless areas, and migration corridors across 11 Western states. Rocky Mountain Wild is monitoring this closely. We’ve published a new blog breaking down what’s at stake and why this legislation is one of the most anti-environmental efforts we’ve seen in years. Read the full post: https://lnkd.in/gRM-wxxG We urge you to contact your Senators and make it clear: public lands are not a bargaining chip. They are essential to biodiversity, community well-being, and climate resilience. #PublicLands #KeepPublicLandsPublic #RockyMountainWild #AnimasMountain #ConservationPolicy #EnvironmentalJustice #WildlifeCorridors #ClimateAction #LandProtection #WesternConservation Animas River, Colorado. Conservation doesn’t just happen in forests or on mountaintops. Sometimes, it happens on maps. This image is part of a story map we co-published that tracks oil and gas lease sales across the West. Every red dot represents a lease sold on lands overlapping with priority big game habitat—over 1.2 million acres of critical migration corridors and winter ranges. This kind of spatial analysis is how Rocky Mountain Wild protects what can’t speak for itself. With this data, we can: -Challenge leasing proposals that ignore wildlife science -Equip local and tribal partners with the evidence they need to push back -Inform public comments, legal strategies, and policy decisions at every level This is what it looks like to turn data into defense—for elk, mule deer, and the ecosystems we all depend on. -Explore the full map here: https://lnkd.in/eVCajqe8 -And if you're in this work too—whether with code, policy, or boots on the ground — let’s connect. #WildlifeCorridors #OilAndGasMapping #GISForGood #RockyMountainWild #BigGameProtection #EnvironmentalJustice #SpatialJustice #DataForDefense

Tomorrow is Colorado Public Lands Day! For Colorado Endangered Species Week, we’d like to celebrate Colorado Public Lands Day by talking about the importance of inclusion and equity in our public lands. Public lands technically belong to and benefit all of us, but certain populations have never felt welcome in our public lands. Others have never seen themselves represented and instead have seen themselves actively erased from the history of public lands. Join us on May 17 for Celebrate Colorado Public Lands Day for more information and direct actions to take! Including a Colorado Public Lands Day Rally at the capitol! Our cherished public lands are under attack. Politicians in D.C. are pushing efforts to sell off, privatize and undermine protections for the lands that define Colorado’s heritage and way of life. That’s why Coloradans are gathering on Saturday, May 17, from 10-11:30 am, at the Colorado State Capitol, to rally together, raise our voices, and defend the public lands that belong to all of us. Learn more about all the activities you can do to protect public lands and ensure they are accessible to all: https://lnkd.in/gw3gmrFx

We have a new set of #Environmental events, community science projects, jobs and internships, and direct actions you can take right now to make our region a greener place!
