European Movement for Detention Houses

About us

RESCALED challenges the concept of ‘prison’ and proposes the concept of ‘detention houses’ instead. Detention houses are small-scale, differentiated and community-integrated. Thanks to these three principles, detention houses contribute to sustainable, safe and inclusive societies.

The personal is political, the political is personal. The Perrie Lectures is an annual event which has the purpose of stimulating dialogue between criminal justice organisations, the voluntary sector and all those with an academic, legal or practical interest in people in prison and their families. Named in honour of Bill Perrie, who retired from the Prison Service in 1978 after 32 years as a prison governor, latterly at HMP Hull, Long Lartin and Winson Green. The lectures aim to improve the care of people in prison and advance penal policy in its broadest sense. At this year's Perrie Lectures, Veronique Aicha shared about detention houses, restorative cities and how her personal experience drives her work today. Her message is clear: “Justice isn’t about walls and distance. It’s about connection, proximity, and responsibility.” collective responsibility. We believe our cities must become restorative. Places that heal the injustice they might have done to people in communities, but also the harm that city ecosystems themselves have inflicted on those same communities. In 2026, RESCALED will organise city walks across Europe to explore what restorative cities can look like in practice. 📖 Read the blog: The personal is political, the political is personal https://lnkd.in/ec-T8WJu 📍 Join a restorative city walk in 2026  or 🤝 Sign up at RESCALED to walk, or to host one. #JusticeReform #RestorativeCities #RESCALED #Community #PerrieLectures #DetentionHouses Rachel Bell

  • “There is not one perfect detention house 'model' – in practice, it materialises in various ways because it depends on a national context, it depends on the legal frameworks, it depends on the community where it is located, and it depends on the local services.” At the first-ever Youth Custody Conference in Salzburg this May, more than 120 experts from 16 countries came together to reimagine what youth detention can look like. Initiated by Salzburg Children’s and Youth Advocacy and Richtungswechsel - AT, Austria now stands at a pivotal crossroads. Experts, practitioners, and policymakers all voiced a strong desire for change, embracing child-centred approaches grounded in dignity, participation, and community integration. By initiating a pilot project based on these values, Austria has the chance to reform its system and contribute meaningfully to a growing European movement, a movement that reimagines detention as a place for support, accountability and healing, a system that gives young people a chance. 📖 Together we look back on an inspiring conference. • Last week, RESCALED joined over 500 changemakers in Chicago for a powerful gathering on criminal and social justice. It was a dream come true to see so many people committed to rethinking justice in our societies. A heartfelt thank you to Chloe Cockburn from Just Impact, Porticus, Morgan H., and many others who made this possible! Among the many inspiring organizations present, there are two we’d like to highlight: One is Designing Justice + Designing Spaces, an organization RESCALED has been following for years. Their mission is to use architecture to tackle the racism, poverty, and unequal access to resources caused by the criminal legal system itself. Co-founder Deanna Van Buren led a workshop on how communities can be transformed together. Participants were invited to envision and design what their community could look like when they would replace prisons with healing-centered infrastructure. 👉 https://lnkd.in/eDvhC_45 The second organization making a big impact is Equity And Transformation. EAT is a non-profit, community-led organization founded by and for formerly incarcerated people. It is committed to building social and economic equity for informal workers and dismantling anti-Black racism in Chicago. Founded in 2018, EAT’s mission is to uplift the voices and power of Black Chicagoans engaged in the informal economy, a diverse range of economic activities, enterprises, and jobs that are not protected or regulated by the state. 👉 https://lnkd.in/drzKfgyF RESCALED will be working on the topic of restorative cities after summer. If you want to participate, collaborate, feel free to reach out! #JusticeReform #CommunityJustice #RESCALED #Decarceration #SocialJustice #Chicago #RestorativeCities

Recently, BrainLog had the privilege of joining forces with leading voices in correctional innovation at Inspirational Session #3 of the RESIZE Project – Reshaping Correctional Competencies through RESCALED Innovation, co-funded by the European Union. The event was organized on May 29th with the title "Staff Profiles and Relational Security," offered a compelling space for professional exchange, reflection, and learning. It was a pleasure to have two outstanding trainers: Tamara Höfer shared real-world insights from her work as a prison officer in England & Wales, shedding light on the evolving role of staff in modern detention settings. Laura Verstraete introduced the concept of relational security—focusing on human connection, trust-building, and inspiring best practices to support safety and rehabilitation. Experts from across Europe took part of the event and thanks to their attendance the session fostered meaningful dialogue, interactive learning, and a shared commitment to innovation in correctional training. As an active partner in the RESIZE project, BrainLog remains committed to championing forward-thinking approaches in correctional environments. We believe that nurturing relational dynamics is essential for building safer, more humane, and effective justice systems. Moreover, as a session highlight we are happy to share that the lively Q&A segment on facility visits, which sparked practical exchange and deepened collective insight. Huge thanks to RESCALED and Richtingswechsels for organizing such an inspiring event—and to all our partners for their invaluable contributions! • At the kick-off meeting in Prague, we officially launched the international project WOMEN: Workspace for Mapping, Engaging and Networking with, for and by incarcerated women - an inspiring initiative aimed at improving conditions for women in detention and strengthening their opportunities for reintegration into society. Funded by the Erasmus+ Epos vzw programme, the project is led by RESCALED, in partnership with RUBIKON Centrum (CZ) and Silta-Valmennusyhdistys ry (FI). The kick-off meeting took place at the Kotlaska Community Centre and Garden, where we held a Human-Centered Design (HCD) workshop. The group - consisting of representatives from all partner organisations, along with an invited practitioner, student, and experience-expert - began prototyping a Knowledge Workspace: a virtual platform designed to promote collaboration, share inspirational practices, and address the real needs of incarcerated women across Europe. On the second day, participants visited the Řepy Women’s Prison, which is featured on the RESCALED map of inspirational practices: 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eSGzUmCz A big thank you to everyone who contributed to this inspiring and productive meeting. We look forward to continuing this journey together! #WOMENproject #HumanCenteredDesign #WomenInDetention #JusticeReform #DetentionHouses #ErasmusPlus #eposvzw
