About us

Australian Python programming enthusiasts are continuing the global PyCon ("Python Conference") tradition in Melbourne from November 22-26, 2024. The Australian PyCon will see dozens of presentations on web programming, business applications, game development, science and mathematics, social issues, education, testing, databases, documentation and more. Unlike formal conferences, PyCons are run by volunteer Python programmers; the users' perspective governs everything from talk selection to conference cost, making an exceptionally worthwhile conference. Participants themselves generate content, which can be as short as a 5 minute Lightning Talk, or as long as a 45-minute "How To" tutorial. PyCon Australia will be a great way to meet other enthusiasts, learn new skills, share ideas and establish connections.

  • PyCon AU 2024 officially came to a close yesterday, and what an incredible journey it has been! This year, we have achieved: - Over 550 attendees - 103 presentations - 2 days of sprint developments - 2 hands-on workshops - Dedicated financial aid program (thanks to our Sponsor Google) - Spectacular catering! (more lamingtons anyone?) None of this would have been possible without all of you. Thank you for being a part of this magical experience and for making PyCon AU 2024 a reality. This event is a testament to the passion, dedication, and collaboration of the amazing Python community. Year after year, your efforts, enthusiasm, and support create an unforgettable experience for everyone involved. A huge thank you also goes to our sponsors, whose generosity and partnership help make this event possible. MongoDB, Python Software Foundation, Kraken, CipherStash, Google, Elastic, Acorn, Multitudes, Ikigai Technology and Linux Australia. • 💻Dan Draper shared an excited way to think about IAM at PyCon AU. Discover how encryption can make access simpler, faster, and more secure! CipherStash 🔥 #PyConAU #PyConAU2024 #PyCon #Encryption #IAM

When you think of IAM (Identity & Access Management) you probably think of Okta, AWS IAM or Ping. Whatever solution, encryption likely isn't on your mind when thinking about IAM! But when combined with fast, identity-based key management like ZeroKMS and searchable encryption that works natively in the database, encryption becomes a powerful and flexible access management tool. We call it Encryption as Access Control and it is: 🗺️ Universal (set policy once, not for every different system) ❌ Deny by default 😎 Identity based 🔍 More granular and precise than RBAC or RLS 🏎️ Fast (< 1ms of query overhead) Last week at PyCon AU, I showed how Encryption as Access Control works and how it compares to traditional solutions like RBAC or database Row-Level Security. Enjoy. PS: Youtube picked the one slide I used of a poodle as the thumbnail so I think I'm going to use him as an unofficial mascot now! https://lnkd.in/gpTuGmWm

We sponsored the PyCon AU 2024 conference, which just finished up this week! If you haven’t heard of it before, it’s a programming conference celebrating and discussing all things to do with the programming language Python. While we don't use Python, we wouldn't be where we are without our hardworking development team, many of whom joined us as graduates and have been with us from the beginning. We know the impact initiatives and events like PyCon have on supporting people’s interest in programming and development. We love to see it! #PyCon #PLMS

  • Congratulations to everyone who successfully contributed to the BeeWare open-source project and earned the challenge coin! 🤫 If you have the coin and are in the Sprint room now, approach Russell Keith-Magee and say “coin check” to unlock the secret! #PyConAU2024 #BeeWare #Python

  • Russell's development sprint is ON FIRE! 🔥 Here are some photos from yesterday where everyone was happily coding and contributing! 💻✨ 🎉 Big congrats to everyone who successfully committed and earned the challenge coin! 🪙 --> If you've got one of these shiny babies, snap a pic, post it, and don’t forget to tag us! 📸🙌 #PyConAU2024 #PyConAU

Last day of PyCon AU 2024's main tracks, and the sessions were as outstanding as yesterday's. Here's the Stashie highlights: 🎤 Kendra Vant's thoughtful exploration of how much of the industry lost its rigour when transitioning from deep learning to GenAI, and a strong call to action to use a scientific approach when building and running AI systems. 🎤 Suzannah Cooper really broke down the concepts behind PostgreSQL's indexes, with practical walkthroughs of GIN and GIST indexes, btrees, and PostgreSQL internals 🎤 Anthony Baxter's heartfelt recount of his journey in Google Crisis Response, with a strong reminder for folks struggling: "If you think you need a break, or if your co-workers think you need a break, you need a break" ❤️ ⚡️ Again, the lightning talks were top notch, but special mention goes to Issey Hogan's rapid fire recap of cool spreadsheet features like IMPORTRANGE and Python in Excel (!!!) Special thanks to the PyCon AU organisers and volunteers for pulling off such a fun, engaging, and safe event, particularly Peter Hall, Benno Rice, Libby Berry, Lilly Ryan as core organisers, and Nic Crouch and ✨ Jack Skinner for sponsorship. Tomorrow we're looking forward to seeing the lucky folks who signed up for our Monday workshop.

    • Photo of presenter standing at a lectern of a large, well-lit stage, with large white slide with graph, text, and emoji projected behind.

The speaker is Kendra Vant. The slide shows a graph with a vertical y-axis labelled "performance on a useful task", and two horizontal bars to the right of the vertical y-axis line.

The top bar reads "Good enough to be useful" and the bottom bar reads "as good as it is feasible to get". Both labels are contained within a red ellipse, and a "frowning face with open mouth" emoji to the right.
  • Hey PyCon AU Community! A huge shoutout to everyone who stopped by Multitudes ‘s amazing booth and contributed to their feedback board. The results are in, and the data is ready for you! 🎉 #PyConAU2024

The final data from our PyCon AU booth feedback board is in! Click through the carousel below to see what the verdict was when we asked the community the following questions: 1. What are you worried about engineering managers using metrics to do? 2. What’s the worst metric for measuring developer performance? 3. What’s something you wish you could measure? The results are clear. Engineers are worried about their managers using metrics to: ➡️ Reward those who game the system ➡️ Increase meeting frequency ➡️ Fire people They believe the worst metrics for measuring developer performance are: ➡️ Lines of code ➡️ Hours worked ➡️ Number of commits Developers wish they could measure: ➡️ The likelihood of leaving ➡️ Collaboration and knowledge sharing ➡️ Wellbeing ➡️ Belonging You might be wondering, why did we, a company that provides metrics, ask developers what they hate about metrics? Well, we're a company that does metrics, but we're not a metrics company - we’re a company that’s all about building great teams. And if developers hate the metrics your company is using, it’s going to be hard to build a great team off the back of that. Ultimately, what matters is how we use the metrics – do we first build a high-trust environment, and do we use the metrics in a way that helps people actually take action to improve? Do you have additional thoughts to share? Tell us in the comments! #PyConAU #SoftwareEngineering #EngineeringMetrics #DevEx
