Last week, the State Law Research Initiative (SLRI), a fiscally sponsored initiative of Proteus Fund, hosted a symposium on "State Constitutions & the Limits of Criminal Punishments" at Rutgers University - Camden Law School. The symposium featured a panel, moderated by Alicia Bannon of the Brennan Center for Justice, with current state supreme court justices, including California Supreme Court Justice Goodwin Liu, New York Court of Appeals Chief Judge Rowan Wilson, and Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court Justice Scott Kafker. About us
Proteus Fund connects philanthropy to the frontlines of social justice. We strive to advance the interconnected goals of racial, gender, queer and disability justice and an inclusive, fully representative democracy. Our work lifts up opportunities, gaps, and challenges facing movement organizations, especially at the state and local level, and then mobilizes support for these efforts. Our donor collaboratives are best-in-class models for bridging responsive philanthropy with cutting-edge social justice movements to create long-lasting impact. Through fiscal sponsorship, Proteus Fund partners with dynamic social justice initiatives which play a powerful role in the larger ecosystem for social change. To date, Proteus Fund, and its affiliated 501c4 organization, the Proteus Action League, have distributed $250 million in grants. Proteus Fund has offices in New York City and metro Boston. Our staff is based across the entire United States.

Thank you to the National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy for including a powerful piece from RISE Together Fund (RTF) Director Rana Elmir in the Fall 2024 issue of Responsive Democracy. Rana's article titled "A clarion call: How attacks on U.S. Palestinian solidarity movements undermine our democracy" explores the deeper implications of the intense scrutiny on and reduced support from #philanthropy for these movements, which are already chronically underfunded. With November's election right around the corner, can our democracy survive its outcome? Regardless of what happens at the national and state levels, what is philanthropy’s role in the steps that follow? In the latest issue of NCRP’s online journal, Responsive Philanthropy organizers and grantmakers explore philanthropy’s role in getting us to the tumultuous times we live in. They encourage grantmakers to prioritize funding democracy movement groups, not just funding candidate campaigns and offer recommendations on what is needed now to move forward well beyond this election year to secure a safe and just democracy for all. Only 7.7% of disabled people working in philanthropy feel comfortable being open about their disabilities at work, according to CHANGE Philanthropy's 2022 Diversity Among Philanthropic Professionals Report. With an estimated 23.1% of people with disabilities working in philanthropy, it's vital for philanthropy to create supportive, accessible, and flexible environments where disabled employees feel comfortable disclosing. Learn how re-shaping workplace policies can create a better environment for disabled employees in The Benefits of Disability Disclosure in Philanthropic Workplaces. #NDEAM Featuring: 🔸 Jennifer Cunningham of Proteus Fund 🔸 Charlotte Haase of Maryland Philanthropy Network 🔸 Amy Dinofrio of RWJF 🔸 Gail Fuller, our Senior Program and Communications Director! Piper Fund's Money in Politics program supports community-based organizations that are advancing reform efforts to limit the influence of money in politics and build community power. As Piper Fund Director Vina Kay writes, "ceding the value of people’s voices and power to corporate interests and a handful of wealthy donors is ceding democracy itself." In a recent blog, she highlights ways that #philanthropy can support efforts to stem the consolidation of power and money. ➡ Read the blog post: https://lnkd.in/eS-gPiqz
