The two coping skills I recommend most often for physical anxiety symptoms are breathing and movement; they're simple and require little thought in the moment. But breathing is more than just “in and out.” Paced breathing exercises like rainbow and birthday breathing provide structured techniques that are both memorable and engaging for kids. I’ve created a handout with six kid-friendly exercises that highlight different approaches to paced breathing. I hope this resource can be helpful for professionals, educators, and caregivers supporting children with anxiety. #mindfulness #therapist #therapy #mentalhealth

What we are reading This July! 📚 Featuring Jenna Pagano LMFT (VA) and VAMFT Board Secretary This month, Jenna Pagano, LMFT and Board Secretary for the Virginia Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (VAMFT), is reading The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt—and it’s already reshaping the way she thinks about both her clinical work and her parenting. In addition to her role at VAMFT, Jenna is a mother of two young children, born in 2019 and 2020. Haidt’s insights into the effects of a phone-based childhood have prompted her to reflect more deeply on how technology is used in her home—not just by individuals, but as a shared family culture. She notes, “This book pushed me to examine what our phones being constantly visible, even fused to our routines, are modeling to my children. What are we teaching about connection, presence, and regulation—without saying a word?” Jenna’s children attend a school that is entirely phone- and smartwatch-free through middle school. In high school, devices must be kept in lockers—lockers which notably do not have locks. “Even with my kids still young, I already feel such gratitude for that intentional boundary. It’s clear the goal is to create space for authentic, uninterrupted connection—and that matters deeply.” One of the themes that resonated most was Haidt’s exploration of how online relationships can be quickly discarded, making it harder for young people to build and maintain meaningful, durable connections. As a systems-focused therapist, Jenna sees that this shift has far-reaching implications—not only for how kids connect with peers, but for how they learn to navigate conflict, belonging, and vulnerability in all areas of life. VAMFT would love to hear from you—what are you reading this month? Share your book recs in the comments! #WhatYourTherapistIsReading #VAMFTReads #MentalHealthProfessionals #TherapistsWhoRead #TheAnxiousGeneration #SummerReading2025
