In October 2024, parts of North America were treated to a rare display of the aurora borealis. 🌀 Alongside the beauty of the Northern Lights, a significant challenge emerged for our navigation systems. Solar flares increased the level of radio noise to the point where GPS receivers had trouble tracking the signal. NGA-run Global Navigation Satellite System sites detected these flares, and in response implemented efforts to mitigate disruptions to worldwide GPS systems. Read more on NGA’s role in the maintenance of GPS here. ➡ https://bit.ly/41fSmap
