  • Cities don’t run on asphalt. They run on data. And planners need months of visuals to see the real patterns: flow, choke points, long-term behavior. That foundation matters. Without it, you’re designing blind. But here’s the truth everyone tiptoes around: If that foundation is old, the whole plan tilts. A lane from last quarter might be rubble today. A work zone might have migrated twice. Traffic behavior shifts in weeks. Not years. Build on stale inputs and you’re planning a city that no longer exists.   • If you have flexibility, use it. Leave early or leave late. Just don't leave at 2pm. Today is the highest-risk travel day of the week. Incident probability is 8% above baseline. This single day accounts for nearly 18% of the week's total traffic. The danger zone is 1pm to 5pm, with 2pm flashing red. This is caused by compressed departure timing. Everyone tries to leave work early to beat the rush, creating the rush they are trying to beat.   • Thanksgiving Day is statistically the safest day of the week. Until everyone tries to drive home. Traffic drops 54%. Incidents plummet 61%. The net result is a 26% lower incident probability. The roads are quiet and boring. Then evening hits. At 6pm, we see a slight pre-dinner spike. Between 10pm and midnight, incidents rise relative to traffic volume. At 11pm, incident propensity jumps 28%. It’s the classic post-dinner travel trap. The roads look empty, so people drive like they own them. If you manage a fleet, the day is fine.   • Not all miles are created equal. In autonomy, the biggest breakthroughs won’t come from driving more, they’ll come from capturing the right miles. Our latest blog dives into the core challenge: Most driving is statistically uneventful. Clear weather, normal flow, predictable behavior. But the miles that truly matter - the long-tail events - are the rare, chaotic, safety-critical moments where AV models are most likely to fail. This is where Nexar’s real-data network shines. By sampling millions of real-world routes across time, cities, and conditions, we consistently capture the unusual: • tricky unprotected left turns, • sudden pedestrian behavior, • obstructed intersections, • strange lighting transitions, • unpredictable human decisions.   • A step toward standardizing how we evaluate AI on real-world driving video. Today, anyone building perception or predictive systems faces the same gap: no widely accepted benchmark for how well AI models understand dashcam video in safety-critical scenarios. So we built one. Our new large-scale incident dataset provides ground-truth annotations purpose-built for benchmarking video understanding models across the scenarios that matter most for autonomous safety: - Accurate incident detection across diverse real-world conditions. - Temporal reasoning — understanding how events evolve over time. - Multi-object tracking in dense, dynamic scenes. - Rare-event recognition essential for ADAS/AV reliability. This benchmark captures what synthetic datasets can’t: real lighting, real weather, real human behavior, and the unpredictable variability of actual roads. We’re releasing it openly to the research community because shared standards and transparent evaluation are the foundation for safer autonomy.   • The 39% Paradox: Why Less Traffic Doesn't Mean Less Risk Our real-world dataset reveals patterns traditional traffic models miss: - 39% drop in traffic volume. - 31.5% drop in total incidents. - But Tuesday: +15% incident probability. - Wednesday: +8% despite 27% fewer vehicles. - Monday–Wednesday compress 17–18% of the week’s travel each into narrow windows. Why it happens: When large populations travel simultaneously, stress, route unfamiliarity, and time pressure create elevated risk, even with fewer vehicles on the road. Why it matters for AV/ADAS: Temporal behavioral patterns must be represented in safety and prediction models. Volume alone is not a proxy for risk. And these anomalies are exactly the kinds of human-driven dynamics that simulation rarely predicts.
