About us
Engineering Custom Robotics Solutions The National Robotics Engineering Center (NREC) is an operating unit within Carnegie Mellon University’s Robotics Institute (RI), the world’s largest robotics research and development organization. NREC works closely with government and industry clients to develop and mature robotic technologies from concept to commercialization. A typical NREC project includes a rapid proof-of-concept demonstration followed by an in-depth development and testing phase that produces a robust prototype with intellectual property for licensing and commercialization. Throughout this process, NREC applies best practices for software development, system integration, and field testing.

After more than 15 years on display at The National Robotics Engineering Center, Dante II is on the move! This pioneering robot, developed by CMU’s Field Robotics Center in the early 1990s, was designed to explore some of the most extreme terrains on Earth. In 1994, Dante II made headlines when it descended into Alaska’s active Mt. Spurr volcano to collect gas samples - an ambitious mission to make hazardous scientific research safer through robotics. Recently, Dante II was carefully taken down from its display in NREC’s high-bay and transported to its new home: the soon-to-be-opened Robotics Innovation Center at Hazelwood Green. There, it will be featured in the lobby as part of an exhibit highlighting the evolution of robotics from early industrial systems to the cutting-edge technologies of today. A big thank-you to everyone who helped preserve and relocate this important piece of robotics history. We are excited for more people to learn about Dante’s legacy and the role it played in shaping the future of field robotics.

Delighted to host Team Pennsylvania and Carnegie Foundry at NREC this week. Look forward to future partnerships to improve jobs and economy in Western PA.
On Monday, Team Pennsylvania gathered in Pittsburgh to tour Carnegie Mellon University's world-renowned National Robotics Engineering Center (NREC) with the Carnegie Foundry. Since its founding in 1995, NREC has leveraged its world-class facilities, talent, and advanced materials to drive innovation and accelerate Pennsylvania’s robotics & tech sector. The Carnegie Foundry then taps into NREC’s innovative solutions to launch startups right here in Pennsylvania, helping to fill market gaps and advance key industries. Pennsylvania has an incredible opportunity to capitalize on its assets and momentum to position itself as a leader in robotics and innovation—and NREC is a global leader playing a pivotal role in making that vision a reality. Together, NREC and the Carnegie Foundry have carved out a unique niche: bridging the commercialization gap between Pennsylvania’s R&D and real-world applications in the private sector, placing them on the cutting edge of emerging industry trends. With faster time-to-market, reduced costs, and lower risks compared to many in-house R&D approaches, NREC’s full-solution, contract R&D model is delivering real results to make Pennsylvania a national leader in this space. For us at Team Pennsylvania, we're thinking about creative applications for robotics and AI to transform the future for the sectors that drive our economy. Thank you to NREC and the Carnegie Foundry for hosting us! #PennsylvaniaInnovation #PennsylvaniaRobotics #Collaboration Richard Fruehauf, Karl Sanchack, Matt Wachter, Jeff Legault, Herman Herman, Lisa Riggs, Rachel Phillips, Kevin Sunday, Abby Smith, Julia Kait, Michael Roth, Adam Walters, Shivum Bharill, Sam DeMarco, Sean Luther David Wade, Ryan Russell
