A fleeting opportunity to turn the studio cyclorama into a canvas with synesthesia artist Sarah Kraning. Inspired by the sounds from our resident music producer, Taka Perry — Sarah’s synesthesia allowed her to paint what she “hears” — translating sound into vibrant colours, textures, and motion. Synesthesia is a rare neurological condition where one sense involuntarily triggers another, allowing individuals to experience sensations like seeing colours when they hear sounds or associating specific tastes with certain words or numbers. Sarah, a renowned American abstract artist, experiences sound in ways most of us can only imagine. With over 100 million views across TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube, her story has captured global attention, with features on HGTV and even the Guggenheim Museum where she was compared to synesthetic legend Wassily Kandinsky. She’s also taken her artistry to the stage, collaborating with musicians in live concert painting events, creating visual masterpieces as the music unfolds in real time.

The first few moments from our 3x Gold Telly Awards winning documentary capturing the aftermath of the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai eruption, with Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) The Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai eruption on January 15, 2022, was one of the most powerful volcanic events ever recorded. The explosion was so immense that it produced one of the loudest sounds in history, heard over 10,000 kilometres away in places like Alaska, and its shockwaves circled the globe several times. The eruption’s shockwave severed Tonga’s only undersea communication cable, cutting off the nation’s internet and phone access for weeks. This left the islands isolated during the crucial early days of the disaster, with loved ones overseas anxiously waiting for any word on the fate of their families and friends. A towering plume of ash and gas, rising over 30 kilometres into the sky, was followed by a tsunami with waves up to 15 metres high. The ashfall blanketed Tonga’s main airport, halting flights, while debris in the ocean prevented ships from docking, further complicating relief efforts. Amidst the devastation, the people of Tonga showcased incredible resilience, coming together with unwavering determination to clear the ash-choked streets, rebuild shattered homes, and restore their way of life. Drawing on their deep cultural strength and strong community bonds, Tongans spearheaded the recovery efforts, turning the tide of destruction into one of hope and perseverance as they worked tirelessly to rebuild their beloved islands.
