About us

The Montana Legislative Branch is one of the 3 branches of state government in Montana. The Legislature is the branch of state government responsible for making the laws needed to maintain public order and ensure the basic security of state. The executive implements the laws passed by the Legislature, and the judiciary interprets the laws and settles any differences of opinion about what they mean and how they should be applied. The organization consists of 5 entities: Legislative Audit Division, Legislative Fiscal Division, Legislative Services Division, House, and Senate. The first 3 divisions have permanent staff that work year round, The House and Senate have staff that come in only for 4 months every other year since the Montana legislature is a part time citizen legislature.
