🌊🔬 New horizons for ocean science — insights from Switzerland and Boston
Last Wednesday evening, we had the pleasure of hosting Engineering the Future of Ocean Science, a conversation on the future of ocean research, innovation, and collaboration between Switzerland and the US.
Raphael Zufferey, Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and former postdoctoral fellow at EPFL, discussed his work developing new forms of aerial-aquatic robots for scientific research.
Dana Yoerger, Senior Scientist in Applied Ocean Physics and Engineering at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, offered fascinating insights from decades at the intersection of robotics and deep-sea research and exploration.
Annette Govindarajan, PhD, Research Specialist in Molecular Ecology at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, joined us remotely to highlight how automated robots can improve sample collection, expanding our understanding of ocean ecosystems.
The conversation was expertly guided by Victor Pennacino, Visiting Researcher at MIT and a graduate student at EPFL, who also gave the audience a close look at prototype robots developed by the MIT AURA Lab.
A heartfelt thank you to each of our speakers for sharing their knowledge and passion, and to everyone who joined for this evening of discovery and exchange.
