In response to the housing and refugee crises, Washington-based Pallet creates rapid response shelter villages that can be constructed in a matter of days. “Welcome to Tiny Homes Reseda, where people come to get their lives together!” says Tracey Carr, case manager at Hope of the Valley Rescue Mission’s shelter for the unhoused in this San Fernando Valley city. She and her colleague Rodrigo Mercado are guiding me through the facility, which opened in 2021 and occupies a former parking lot abutting Reseda’s Randal D. Simmons Park. It consists of 101 beds, and assists with things like housing navigation, mental health services, substance abuse counseling, and job training and placement. And as the name “tiny home” suggests, it contains 52 individual units—which are, nationwide, becoming a key bridge between congregant shelters (in which people bunk together) and permanent supportive housing. https://lnkd.in/evwD7PZN

About us
DESIGN THE FUTURE METROPOLIS has its finger on the pulse of what’s next in architecture and interior design. Every day, we feature projects, publish insights, create resources, and organize events to keep you connected to the future of design. For more than four decades, we have been committed to a sustainable, just, and nurturing built environment. We dedicated an issue to sustainability in September 1996, were the first to report the connection between architecture and climate change in October 2003, and addressed interior design’s carbon emissions in our November/December 2020 issue. In 2021, METROPOLIS was instrumental in launching the Interior Design Pledge for Positive Impact, and spearheaded the creation of the Climate Toolkit for Interior Design. We never lose sight of the biggest goals for architecture and design: Making people’s lives better and safeguarding life on this planet.

Led by principals and cofounders Andrew McGee and Matthew Hettler, NYC-based studio Format Architecture Office, PLLC balances bold design with a sharp focus on functionality. Before building anything, the team cultivates a deep understanding of how people actually live and move within a space. Their highly collaborative process involves honing a client’s vision according to use, but it begins with uncovering the why of it all. “We like to place clients in the driver’s seat regarding their ideas for a project by asking, ‘What is your vision for this space?’ ” says McGee. “Because the word ‘vision’ implies all the extras—what you really want as opposed to just basic needs. I like to let clients sit in that more expansive space right away.” https://lnkd.in/euMaYYvW

In the past decade, and certainly since the pandemic, there has been a palpable, if subtle, shift: Architects and architecture schools are making more concerted efforts to inspire the non–architects or design-minded among us to think about why and how the built environment matters. There is also an increased demand for institutes of higher education to use their expertise and assets to help solve pressing problems, from health care to housing. Check the interviews with architects and educators about these advances: THE PLACE, MEMORY, AND CULTURE INCUBATOR • The City College of New York • Marta Gutman, dean, professor, and codirector • Jerome Haferd, codirector and assistant professor BEFORE BUILDING • University of Virginia • Katie MacDonald, Architect, director • Kyle Schumann, director SHARE LAB • University of Florida • Karla Saldaña Ochoa, director and assistant professor THE SHELTER CONSTRUCTION PROGRAM • The School of Architecture • Stephanie Lin, dean TALLWOOD DESIGN INSTITUTE • Oregon State University and University of Oregon • Judith Sheine, director of design HUMATLAB • Penn State University • DK Osseo-Asare, director https://lnkd.in/e-mBzK22
