🔴 Heritage Alert 🔴 📣 ICOMOS is issuing a worldwide #HeritageAlert to amplify awareness of the threat to the Archaeological Remains of the First Moji Railway Station Complex, Kitakyushu City, Japan 🚧 👷♂️ 🏗 The archaelogical remains are under imminent threat due to planned construction by the municipal government. These well-preserved foundations from the late 19th century are of immense historical and architectural significance, and are a testimony to Japan's transition from pre-modern to modern engineering practices. 📝 The City of Kitakyushu is urged to suspend construction activities, consult with experts, and engage the public to properly assess and preserve the heritage value of the First Moji Railway Station Complex. An academic committee should be formed to develop a conservation plan, and no permits should be issued that might harm archaeological remains. The Agency for Cultural Affairs and Fukuoka Prefectural Government should provide guidance to the City of Kitakyushu, and JR Kyushu is asked to halt and review their work to protect the site's archaeological integrity. ❗ ICOMOS stands ready to offer its full expertise and support to the Kitakyushu municipal authorities and relevant ministries in their efforts to conserve this irreplaceable cultural heritage. 🔗 Read our statement and take action: https://buff.ly/3Xusy8H

🎉 Today is the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples! 🌱 #WorldIndigenousDay aims to raise awareness on the need to respect and recognise the role of Indigenous populations as bearers of significant cultural traditions, skills, languages and knowledge. Because of their marginalisation, often the result of the lasting effects of colonisation or climate change, Indigenous peoples frequently face threats to their cultural tangible and intangible heritage. 📚 ICOMOS National Committees, Scientific Committees and dedicated Working Groups such as the Working Group on Indigenous Heritage or Our Common Dignity - Rights Based Approaches often conduct research on the importance of Indigenous heritage protection. ▫️ Read the 2023 ICOMOS Australia publication on Indigenous cultural heritage legislation in Australia: https://buff.ly/3WBWyhp ▫️ Read about the Our Common Dignity Working Group's achievements: https://buff.ly/4703zMu 📖 Indigenous heritage was central to the ICOMOS 2023 General Assembly and Scientific Symposium in Sydney, Australia, where best practices in Indigenous heritage protection were shared through case studies. Participants also provided insights on the issues of education, resilience, rights-based approaches, local community empowerment and participation within the World Heritage process. ▫️ Read the GA2023 Book of Abstracts: https://buff.ly/46FwRkG
