The IARPA SINTRA program aims to investigate the interaction of orbital debris with the surrounding space environment and drive the state of the art to detect, track, and characterize lethal non-trackable orbital space debris. Space debris poses a risk to all space missions, including those of the Intelligence Community (IC). With an average low Earth orbit (LEO) impact velocity of 22,500 MPH, even the smallest of debris can cause significant damage. Currently, there are over 100 million objects greater than 1 mm orbiting the Earth, however, less than 1 percent of debris that can cause mission-ending damage are currently tracked.

The HIATUS program aims to develop novel human-useable systems for attributing authorship and protecting author privacy. Authorship attribution capabilities address many Intelligence Community (IC) needs, including combating sophisticated malicious information campaigns online and identifying counterintelligence risks. Authorship privacy capabilities protect authors whose writing, if attributed, could place them in danger.

UC2 attended IARPA ReSCIND in San Diego and explored ongoing work in cyberpsychology, taking advantage of access to research in person. Biointelligence and Biosecurity for the Intelligence Community (B24IC) program seeks to develop new capabilities, matching the wider synthetic biology and biotechnology fields, ensuring the Intelligence Community’s (IC’s) capability to meet the biointelligence and biosecurity threats of the 21st century. This includes developing new ways to collect, detect, analyze, and prevent traditional biothreats while also addressing the promise and perils associated with the growing fields of biotechnology and synthetic biology. To address these challenges, the IC seeks to advance research across multiple sub-disciplines of biology. In recent decades, the rise of synthetic biology has corresponded with critical advances in biology research. The IC, and IARPA specifically, has pursued numerous research programs to advance security interests, but the needs of the IC require rapid advancement of numerous research topics to meet and leverage the advances the many biological disciplines have brought into reality in the past decades.
