Our challenge for the reinvention of Sydney’s Darling Harbour was not merely to construct three venues totalling 250,000 sqm, but to successfully dissolve their imposing scale into the city’s essential public life. How does a massive conference, exhibition and entertainment hub become an integrated extension of the city? The 20-hectare urban renewal scheme, led by Hassell, provides an answer by prioritising connection over enclosure. The design strategically carved out 3,000m2 more public space and introduced 650 new trees, transforming the waterfront from a series of disconnected precincts into a continuous civic park. Our rigorous focus on public space - enhancing cycling routes, pedestrian links, and transport access - effectively stitches the revitalised Darling Harbour back into the surrounding neighbourhoods and the city centre, ensuring the network of places serves as dynamic, highly utilised green corridors for locals and visitors alike. 🔗 Explore more: https://lnkd.in/gGaknh7F 📷 Image 1 & 3: Photography by Brett Boardman Image 2: Photography by Simon Wood Hassell and Populous designed the International Convention Centre (ICC) venues in a joint venture. #DarlingHarbour #BrisbaneOlympics #2032Olympics #Stadium #VenueDesign #PublicSpaces #PrecinctDesign #UrbanDesign

About us
We are a leading international design practice with studios in Asia, Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States. Our purpose is to create a better future by designing the world’s best places – places people love. Our design values are shared globally across all our studios, by the talented people who work in them: architects, interior designers, landscape architects, urban designers, planners and specialist consultants. We work across a broad range of scales, from the interior design of a boutique retail store through to major public architecture and strategic urban planning for cities. And we work together in integrated design teams because they produce the best outcomes for our clients. Our focus is on people and how we create better, more meaningful experiences for them. We do that through creative, holistic thinking, a deep knowledge base and a rigorous design process. We judge the success of the buildings and places we design by the way people use and enjoy them - the clients who commission them, the people who inhabit them. We are a Certified B Corp. The completion of the Zhangjiang Pharmaceutical Campus marks a significant step in the Zhangjiang Group’s strategy to consolidate Shanghai's sprawling biomedical research sector into a single, unified intellectual hub. The campus, which anchors a critical area of the Zhangjiang science district, is explicitly designed to maximise cross-institutional activity and encourage idea-sharing, bringing together scientists, students and professionals from diverse fields. By leveraging these connections, we aim to cultivate an environment that fosters growth, innovation, and collaboration, positioning the campus as a physically integrated engine intended to boost China’s high-tech and pharmaceutical development goals. At the heart of the campus, the dynamic community is drawn to a central canopy with facilities designed to support all forms of connection - from brainstorming sessions and research discussions to casual conversations over a drink or meal. 🔗 Discover more about the project: https://lnkd.in/gaTabc_V 📷 Photography by Dirk Weiblen #CorporateCampus #Workplace #LifeSciences #Architecture #Innovation #Collaboration #ScienceCommunity #FutureOfScience

We’re proud to share that First Building has been recognised with a Good Design Australia Award for Social Impact. In collaboration with our cultural design partner Djinjama, the building embeds Indigenous knowledge and sustainable design principles to set new benchmarks for connection to Country. Its modular kit-of-parts allows it to be disassembled, expanded, or relocated — ensuring lasting adaptability. Aligned with this year’s theme, Design for Better, the award celebrates how thoughtful design can create more balanced, inclusive, and sustainable futures. The jury noted: “As the first completed building in Australia’s newest city, the Bradfield City Centre First Building sets a new benchmark in regenerative urban design. Housing stage one of the Advanced Manufacturing Readiness Facility (AMRF), it demonstrates adaptability, circularity, and resilience while integrating with Country. A powerful example of world-class architecture with enduring impact.” First Building also received the award for Sustainability at the Timber Design Awards, while our Tumbalong Green Sound Shell at Darling Harbour, Sydney took home the People’s Choice award. 🔗 Learn more about First Building here: https://lnkd.in/gXNcdm-g 📷 Image 1-3: Photography by MARK SYKE Image 4: Photography by Sara Vita Australian Timber Design Awards Bradfield Development Authority #GoodDesignAwards #DesignForBetter #SocialImpact #Architecture #UrbanDesign #RegenerativeDesign #BradfieldCityCentre #Hassell #TimberDesignAwards

Our concept for the Taranto Stadio del Nuoto in southern Italy goes beyond a mere sports complex. The project serves as ‘landscape infrastructure’ that harmonises the Mediterranean Games within the city of Taranto, leaving a legacy and setting the stage for future urban transformation. The result of our Competition Hub, the design complements the city's topography, forming pedestrian pathways and captivating spaces. Stairs and terraces surrounding the pools transform from spectator seating into an inviting amphitheatre for everyday community use. The synergy between architecture and landscape is realised through a curated selection of materials, with stone terraces and platforms visually connecting the nearby archaeological park to the amphitheatre-style design, extending down to the sea. 🔗 Explore more of our award-winning sports venue designs: https://lnkd.in/gnJzVDHs International Committee of the Mediterranean Games #DesignCompetition #Italy #Taranto #TarantoStadioDelNuoto #MediterraneanGames #Architecture #Design #SportDesign #Brisbane2032

Imagine a workplace so thoughtfully designed it feels like a second home — with green spaces, access to fresh air and space to focus. Now, picture nearly every interior element, from walls to seating, being salvaged and given new life. This is the reality at global built environment consultancy Arup's new Brisbane, Australia headquarters. From Museum of Brisbane display boxes reimagined as furniture to crushed oyster shells collected from Queensland restaurants and used to form render, regenerative design is core to the story of this studio. As one of Australia's few workplaces pursuing Living Building Challenge certification, the numbers speak volumes: 98.4% of all building waste diverted from landfill, 73% of the fit-out sourced from the Australian east coast, and working with FIVE MILE RADIUS, over 100 salvaged components. 📍Arup Yuggera and Turrbal Country Brisbane, Australia Arup’s new workplace was created with FIVE MILE RADIUS, Buildcorp, Blaklash, Acuity and Studio Ongarato 🔗 Step inside: https://lnkd.in/guJRVRJu 🎥Video courtesy of Arup. #WorkplaceDesign #OfficeDesign #Sustainability #InteriorDesign #RegenerativeDesign #Brisbane #BrisbaneDesign Keisha Leon

Meet Craig Guthrie, Principal Landscape Architect on Melbourne's Metro Tunnel Project, opening to the public in December. Craig loves turning the ordinary into the extraordinary. His landscape designs for the Metro will significantly impact Melbourne's public spaces. They will revitalise the City Square and expand green areas like the Albert Road Reserve near the new Anzac Station, creating a large green corridor that connects Albert Park, the Shrine of Remembrance, and the Domain Parklands. This design-led, above-station urban greening project also contributes to the bigger picture 'Shrine to Sea' initiative that will carve a biodiversity corridor between the Domain Parklands and Port Phillip Bay. 📍 Metro Tunnel Project Wurundjeri and Bunurong Country Melbourne, Australia 🔗 Discover more on our award-winning transport designs: https://lnkd.in/g3uc_GkP The design for the Metro Tunnel Project is a world-class collaboration between leading design practices Hassell, WW+P Architects and RSHP. #MetroTunnel #MetroTunnelProject #Melbourne Rail Projects Victoria
