Give 31 students a real-world mapping problem, and they’ll deliver a real-world solution. We’re proud to say their work is now live on GrabMaps. We’re buzzing with energy after wrapping up our GeoStars x UTM 2025 program! We joined forces with an exceptional crew from the Faculty of Built Environment & Surveying at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) to tackle the real-world mapping issues our driver-partners face daily—like inaccurate pins and unlisted paths. This wasn't just a project; it was about bridging academic studies with hands-on experience. The team’s passion was incredible to witness, especially during a three-day "Mapathon" where they added over 4,500 buildings to OpenStreetMap! A special shout-out to our driver-partner, Thamrin Izham Megat Yunus. As a IoT KartaCam Product expert responsible for capturing our street-level imagery, he gave the students a masterclass in practical data collection, showing them exactly how their contributions make a difference on the road. The best part? The brand-new UTM Skudai Outdoor Map, created entirely by these students, is now LIVE in the Grab app. This new, detailed navigation feature, powered by GrabMaps, is ready to guide the entire Johor Bahru community around campus.
