I visited with the team at the General Motors D.C. office this week and dropped off a little memento highlighting our collaboration to address distracted driving. The Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) and GM are focused on changing the culture around distraction so that it’s just as socially unacceptable as driving drunk or not wearing a seat belt. By working together, we've been able to raise awareness of how pervasive distracted driving is, enabled states to implement local outreach campaigns and engage youth from around the country in the movement for distraction-free streets. I am truly grateful to the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) for the incredible Emerging Leaders in Highway Safety Seminar. The insights and knowledge shared during this seminar were invaluable, and I feel honored to have been part of such a wonderful and knowledgeable class of highway safety leaders. ⚠️ HAPPENING NEXT WEEK ⚠️ Successful engagement with Tribal communities requires attention to a variety of cultural and judicial considerations. Tribal law governs the enforcement work that the communities do and impacts the types of support that State Highway Safety Offices can provide, while understanding tribal culture and customs impacts the ability to develop effective partnerships. Nine Tribal communities across the U.S. use roadside oral fluid testing to screen for drug use among drivers to help limit the necessity for blood draws from Tribal members. Join GHSA for a webinar, made possible by the support of Intoximeters, exploring how and why the Miccosukee Tribe has implemented an oral fluid screening program, and ways that SHSOs can help support impaired driving enforcement programs on Tribal lands in a way that is culturally sensitive and effective. The Washington Traffic Safety Commission is working with MICHELIN Mobility Intelligence and Cambridge Mobile Telematics to use large-scale telematics data to analyze risky driving behaviors without identifying individual drivers. The Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) Emerging Leaders Seminar is underway! Pam Shadel Fischer is welcoming a fantastic group of students that is ready to dig in for a very full day of learning. I’m thrilled to be a part of this and look forward to the next 2.5 days.

Of the many things we do at GHSA, one of the most important is fostering the next generation of roadway safety visionaries through our Emerging Leaders in Highway Safety Seminar. We are in awe and so appreciative of the dedication, creativity and pure passion for saving lives this amazing group of leaders has brought to D.C. this week!

I’m super excited to facilitate this year’s Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) Emerging Leaders seminar with DeAngela Gaymon, PMP and Dortha Cummins. Over the next 2.5 days we’ll be working with 28 dynamic highway safety professionals representing 21 states, DC and two territories. A big thank you to Alliance Highway Safety for their support and DC Highway Safety Office Director Rick Birt for hosting us in the nation’s capitol.

Over the last year, GHSA has awarded nearly $1 million to State Highway Safety Offices to reduce dangerous driving and make roads safer for everyone. Working with a diverse range of partners, we've funded initiatives: 🚸 Providing safe mobility options to youth in underserved areas 📊 Collecting new and actionable forms of safety data 🚗 Encouraging the use of ride-hailing instead of driving impaired 🛴 Increasing children's' access to safe, active transportation 📵 Preventing distracted driving through public awareness 🚓 Helping police identify drunk and drug-impaired drivers Learn more in our Annual Report.
