Going underground: A tour of global geothermal projects in progress: 🏭 Breakthroughs in drilling methods and heat extraction techniques are widening the appeal of geothermal power systems across the world, and geothermal generation capacity is on track to double once projects currently in development are completed. 🍰 Currently, only around 2% of global energy generation comes from geothermal projects, according to Energy Institute data, which places the technology squarely in the niche category of the global energy mix. 🗺️ However, around 35 countries or territories are constructing or have plans to build new geothermal capacity, according to Global Energy Monitor (GEM), creating the potential to make geothermal generation a more mainstream affair. 🦾 Of that total, 18 of those locations are already familiar with the technology and are within tectonically-active regions with high-temperature rock deposits relatively close to the earth's surface. 👏 However, a nearly equal number of locations will be developing geothermal projects for the first time, which is a testament to the growing appeal of geothermal to power suppliers and the growing suitability of the technology to more locations. ➡️ Below is a roundup of the key geothermal hotspots around the world and the main markets to track for rapid expansions to geothermal generation capacity in the years ahead. https://lnkd.in/gYYfEQUm Reuters Open Interest, with data from Global Energy Monitor

Who owns the world’s energy and industrial assets — and how does that shape global emissions? Join Global Energy Monitor for a webinar introducing the Global Energy Ownership Tracker, an open dataset mapping relationships among more than 48,000 assets and 26,000 companies worldwide. The session will show how anyone can use the dataset to uncover ownership structures, identify patterns, and conduct analysis — no coding required — featuring case studies from GEM’s Hidden Emissions and Nominees reports. 🗓 November 5, 2025 🕐 11am EST / 4pm UTC 🔗 Register here: https://lnkd.in/eEzTzqFR 📊 Gain insight into how ownership data can bring greater transparency to the global energy system.

  • Join us for Inside Heavy Industry — Issues, Solutions and Careers, a webinar co-hosted by Global Energy Monitor (GEM) and the Asian Environmental Youth Network (AEYN). The session will bring together climate professionals to discuss the cement, steel, and petrochemical industries — and provide insights and tools for students and early-career professionals in Asia interested in entering this field. Heavy industry — including steel, cement, and petrochemicals — accounts for roughly 25% of global emissions, with much of that activity concentrated in Asia. These sectors are among the most challenging to decarbonize due to technological and cost barriers, but there’s growing opportunity for innovation and impact. 🪧 Register here by November 5: https://lnkd.in/dF9KczwQ 📆 Event Date: Sunday, November 9 (6:30 PM IST, 9PM GMT+8) 🌏 Location: Virtual - Zoom

We are in the messy middle of the energy transition, with the simultaneous buildout of fossil fuel infrastructure and renewable energy installations - often on colossal scales. Open data is fundamental to the entire energy community in ensuring we all understand what is really happening in the sector, separating fact from hyperbole, to underpin our public discourse. Global Energy Monitor's role is to bring the granular facts to light, even as the world around us grows more uncertain. Global Energy Monitor's in-depth analysis unearths overlooked realities and helps steer the global dialogue on the energy transition, and it wouldn’t be possible without reliable datasets tracking every corner of the world’s energy sector. I highly encourage all to read this story about how Global Energy Monitor's data and network helped underpin Indonesia's energy decisions: https://lnkd.in/gevbaUiV RMI, Rizky Fauzianto, Wini Rizkiningayu, Ted Nace, Flora Champenois, Christine Shearer, Institute for Essential Services Reform (IESR), Carolina Chau, Abby Henkel Roman, Louisa Plotnick, Ryan Driskell Tate, #cleanenergy #energy #renewables #sustainability #energytransition

Last new coal plant proposals cancelled or shelved in Thailand, Kenya, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, Cambodia deciding not to build any new coal, Morocco committing to a 2040 coal phase-out, proposals for new coal power outside China at record low - lots of progress happening outside the global front page headlines.

📊 New global #CoalPlant data is now available. GEM's October supplement highlights continued declines in coal power development outside China: ➡️ Countries with coal power under development hit a new low — only 33 are still proposing or building new plants, as 42 countries have eliminated coal power under development since the Paris Agreement. ➡️ Thailand cancelled its last coal project, the Mae Moh expansion, ending more than a decade of speculation. ➡️ Cambodia and Morocco strengthened their Paris-aligned commitments, pledging no new coal and a 2040 phaseout, respectively. ➡️ New coal proposals totaled less than 2 GW in Q3 2025 — 85% below the quarterly average of the past two years. Coal development remained limited overall, with only two countries proposing and three starting construction on new plants, including Afghanistan’s first-ever coal plant proposal. Together, these developments mark a continued global retreat from coal power. 🔍 Explore the updated data: https://lnkd.in/g83mc3YK

  • 📈 U.S. LNG investment hit record highs in 2025 — but the boom may backfire. Developers took final investment decisions (FIDs) on five new export projects, adding 59 mtpa of capacity, with even more proposals in the pipeline. Zoom out, and the picture gets starker: the U.S. now accounts for nearly half of all global LNG capacity additions committed through 2031. That build-out risks tipping global markets into long-term oversupply — tightening gas supply (and prices) in the U.S. while driving down profit margins for LNG producers. 🔍 Explore the data, maps, and trends in GEM’s Global Gas Infrastructure Tracker (GGIT): https://lnkd.in/eriw8ANv
