Over the last 25 years, the world has cut child mortality in half. 2025 is the first year this century when the number of dying children will go up. We have a roadmap to cutting the number of child deaths in half again by investing in proven interventions like vaccines and bed nets, and new game-changing innovations. Excited to be heading to the annual Goalkeepers event in New York in less than a week! It's a special return for me after rejoining the Gates Foundation this year, but I'm no stranger to this event – I was there for the inaugural one back in 2017, and I can still remember feeling the incredible energy and optimism in the air. As we gear up for this year's event, the need for positivity and hope feels more crucial than ever! Taking a trip down memory lane with my Gates Foundation colleagues, reminiscing about past Goalkeepers experiences filled with joy and (lots of!) laughter, is the perfect way to prep for what's to come.

What’s giving me hope this year? Overdue momentum building around women’s health R&D. This morning, Melinda French Gates announced a $100M co-investment between Pivotal Ventures and Wellcome Leap to fast-track women’s health breakthroughs. Like the Gates Foundation’s $2.5B investment earlier this year, it will focus on high-impact areas of women’s health like cardiovascular health, autoimmune disease, and mental health. The partnership will launch two new programs in 2026 using Leap's proven model for delivering breakthroughs. Women’s health is at the heart of global progress, yet it's been overlooked for decades.
