With Apple Vision Pro, Meta’s Ray-Ban Display glasses, and Alphabet Inc.’s latest AR prototypes, one thing is clear: AR is shifting from “future tech” to everyday tech. All of these everyday AR devices aim for the same target: integrating information and AI into daily life while desperately trying not to overwhelm the user. What’s interesting is that sports have long been the proving ground for new tech innovation and adoption for years. Swimming and FORM are a prime example. In sports, “good enough” isn’t about eyewear with 4k cameras or a high-resolution display; it’s about delivering the right information at the right moment in a form factor athletes actively choose to wear. Real value for them is created through clarity, simplicity, functionality and timing. As AR enters mainstream lifestyle use, the same questions apply: What information is beneficial in the moment? What compromises are people willing to accept for real-world benefit? Which form factor makes “good enough” feel invisible? Successful sports AR eyewear solutions to date have shown that the winning formula isn’t maximalism; it’s about providing relevance at the right time, generating frictionless adoption. If Big Tech’s AR push tells us anything, it’s that everyday AR will need to follow the same path. Overwhelming experiences will push users away, while the companies and devices that win the face will be the ones that look to AR for sport, knowing exactly when to surface data, coaching, or encouragement… and when to stay out of the way.
