The pine warbler is unlike most of its kind. It is one of the few warblers that may overwinter in parts of southern Canada, and it is the only warbler known to regularly feed on seeds—sometimes even showing up at feeders stocked with suet and sunflower seeds. As its name suggests, the pine warbler is rarely seen far from pines. This small, olive-toned songbird depends on mature pine forests, where its steady trill is a familiar sound in late summer. #NationalForestWeek reminds us of the importance of safeguarding these ecosystems—not just for recreation and climate resilience, but for species like the pine warbler that rely on healthy, mature forests to survive. 📷 ©: Pine Warbler by Justin via iNaturalist. Conserving Canadian wetlands and other natural spaces for waterfowl, wildlife, and people for more than 80 years
About us
Wetlands are one of the most important ecosystems on the planet. Unfortunately, up to 70 per cent of wetlands have been lost in settled areas of Canada. More are lost every day. Wetlands do many important jobs for us. They help clean our water. They are home to hundreds of species of wildlife. They protect our communities from flooding and droughts. They store carbon, helping in the fight against climate change. Since 1938, we have been working hard to save Canada’s wetlands. Backed by sound science, we have what it takes to make a real difference. It’s why we’re leading the way in wetland conservation. We know what needs to be done. We know how to do it. Now, more than ever, we need your help.

National Tree Day is a reminder of the vital role forests play in our lives. 🌲 Canada’s boreal forest is a vast landscape where trees and wetlands work together to sustain communities and wildlife: ✅ Stores carbon in peatlands: Boreal peatlands lock carbon underground, keeping it out of the atmosphere and helping fight climate change. ✅ Buffers against floods and droughts: Boreal wetlands hold water during floods and release it during droughts, helping to stabilize local ecosystems and communities. ✅ Provides critical wildlife habitat: Each year, about 40% of North America’s ducks visit the boreal forest to nest and raise their young. ✅ Supports Indigenous stewardship in conservation: Ducks Unlimited Canada works with Indigenous communities to support land use planning that aligns with local conservation visions and integrates sound science, ensuring conservation decisions are sustainable, culturally respectful, and effective in supporting wetlands, wildlife, and water resources. Few wild places remain on Earth like Canada’s boreal forest. With a balanced approach, we can get conservation right—together. #NationalForestWeek #NationalTreeDay #Biodiversity #Conservation

Canada’s boreal forest is one of the world’s last great wild places. 🌲 Spanning 1.3 billion acres, it is defined by water and wildlife. Its wetlands safeguard fresh water, buffer against floods and drought, and store vast amounts of carbon—helping to mitigate the impacts climate change. More than 600 Indigenous communities call the boreal region home. For thousands of years, hunting, trapping and gathering have been central to their lives—and remain an integral part of culture today. As we mark #NationalForestWeek, we are reminded of the importance of safeguarding these landscapes—not only for wildlife and water, but for communities and future generations. 🌎 #BorealForest #WetlandConservation #IndigenousStewardship

Bottoms up! 🦆 Northern pintails, like these observed in Richmond, B.C., are often seen dabbling headfirst for food in wetlands. These ducks are among the first to migrate south each fall, marking the beginning of waterfowl hunting season. Beyond their role in hunting traditions, pintails are an important conservation priority. Highly sensitive to habitat loss and nest disturbance, their populations are monitored annually by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) in collaboration with the Canadian Wildlife Service. You can contribute to conservation efforts as a citizen scientist. Join our Migration Tracker project on iNaturalist this fall and help collect the data that informs wetland conservation efforts across Canada. 👉 https://loom.ly/wiwvvLQ 📷: Northern Pintail by © John Martin via iNaturalist. We extend our congratulations to Don and Geraldine Bettle of Passekeag Holdings Inc., recipients of the Canadian Cattle Association’s 2025 Environmental Stewardship Award (TESA). 🌱 Based near Passekeag, N.B., the Bettles have farmed for nearly 50 years and continue to demonstrate exemplary stewardship of the land, water and wildlife habitat. Their commitment includes a 35-year partnership with Ducks Unlimited Canada. In 1990, they partnered with DUC to restore a 78-acre wetland on their farm, which continues to provide valuable habitat in Atlantic Canada. As a Foundational Partner of TESA, and through our long-standing relationship with the Bettles, we are pleased to recognize this achievement. Their leadership in sustainable farming and conservation showcases how agricultural innovation and environmental stewardship go hand in hand. This acquisition will enhance an ecological corridor that supports biodiversity, while safeguarding community access for recreation and traditional activities.
We partnered with Ducks Unlimited Canada to conserve 16.6 hectares of forests and #wetlands in #NewfoundlandAndLabrador. This project was made possible thanks to funding from the Canada Nature Fund’s Natural Heritage Conservation Program (NHCP). NHCP is a national program that contributes to the creation of protected and conserved areas by supporting partners to secure private lands and private interests in lands. The conserved area will help to protect migratory songbirds and #SpeciesAtRisk like the Red Crossbill. Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) is excited to announce the acquisition of 41 acres (16.6 hectares) of forested wetland, upland and swamp habitat near Bidgood Park in St. John’s, N.L. This expansion will enhance an ecological corridor that supports migratory songbirds, waterfowl, moose and the endangered red crossbill, while safeguarding community access for recreation and traditional activities. “Thanks to this collaboration, Ducks Unlimited Canada will be adding forty-one acres to the Bidgood Park landscape, enhancing an ecological corridor that serves wildlife and local communities. The expanded space will mean more for the people of St. John's to enjoy and learn from. This new area will stitch wetlands and woodlands together, building a stronger whole that will help sustain migratory birds and countless other species.” - Pat Kehoe, chief conservation officer, DUC The project is generously supported by funding from Environment and Climate Change Canada's Natural Heritage Conservation Program; and DUC's North American partners: Fall Flights, the North American Wetlands Conservation Act, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS).
