As part of DOB Customer Service Week, our Code and Zoning Interpretation team gave back in a big way! They held a one-week food drive and donated 94 lbs. of food to the Bowery Mission. Great teamwork, great cause, and great service to our city! 💙 Find a food pantry near you: https://lnkd.in/g4is_zX9

Four workers are lucky to be alive after what should’ve been a routine concrete pour turned into a 32-foot fall in Brooklyn’s Sunset Park Tuesday morning 👀 At the scene, our inspectors determined that during a concrete pour on the first floor, a section of the deck (approx. 20 ft x 24 ft) collapsed, causing four construction workers to fall roughly 32 feet to the sub-cellar level. All four workers were responsive when transported to a nearby hospital where they were treated in stable condition. Following an on-site investigation, DOB inspectors issued violations to the General Contractor for their failure to safeguard the site, providing inadequate orientation for workers, and performing work contrary to approved safety plans. A Partial Stop Work Order has been issued for all concrete operations at the site. As the season turns colder, this is a strong reminder to take your time and make sure you are following all approved plans to the letter! Safety must come first on every site.

Reminder: The Second PIPS Deadline Is Fast Approaching! Owners of parking structures in the Upper East Side, Upper Manhattan, and Brooklyn must submit their Periodic Inspection of Parking Structures (PIPS) engineering reports by December 31, 2025. If you haven’t yet contracted a qualified inspector, now is the time to act! Compliance with the PIPS program is critical to maintaining the safety and integrity of New York City’s parking structures. Failure to meet this requirement will result in enforcement actions from the Department. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gVSbqzNF

Deadline Reminder: Local Law 97 reports due by year’s end! There are less than two months left for property owners to submit their Local Law 97 emission reports. Out of roughly 23,000 covered properties, a commendable 94% are already working with DOB toward compliance in this first reporting year. Our goal now is to help the remaining buildings get on track with a manageable LL97 compliance pathway before the deadline. Property owners in need of assistance can contact NYC Accelerator for free, personalized guidance on energy efficiency upgrades and carbon reduction strategies: https://accelerator.nyc/ Let’s make this a successful first year for Local Law 97 compliance 💚 Learn more: https://lnkd.in/eK2QHNnA

We continue to drive down constructed-related incidents and injuries. The data are clear and the news continues to be good. How good? How about a 38% reduction year-to-date in 2025, which is on top of a 30% reduction that took place in calendar 2024? This means more New Yorkers are putting in a day’s work and returning home to their families unharmed. We should be aware of the positive trend and applaud everyone who has contributed to this increased safety. I want to thank our NYC Department of Buildings team, in particular, for this remarkable achievement. There is correlation between construction safety and training, and our comprehensive training efforts are built on the integrity of DOB Site Safety Cards. Officially issued cards mean that workers have received their training, which in turn equates to increased safety. And the number of folks having undergone training is impressive and continues to grow: Site Safety cards: 386,928 Worker Wallet cards 80,516 Total active cards: 533,592 There have been 46 million card taps at construction sites across NYC. And remember this simple equation: Card taps = training = increased safety. So much is at stake with this training that along with our law enforcement partners, the DOB remains committed to ensuring the integrity of our safety course provider program. We vividly recall the inimitable investigative journalist Greg Smith wrote in The City in 2023: “With a bolstering of training requirements came the inevitable grifters eager to make money off of regulation meant to save lives.” I close with one very large caveat: With construction safety, there is never a “Mission Accomplished” banner. It’s a continual effort, and we are only as good as the previous day if all our workers got home safely. We have had six construction worker fatalities to date. We mourn those losses and we know all these data points mean nothing if DOB becomes less vigilant, the industry grows lax, or individual workers act negligently. Let's keep building New York safely!

New housing opportunities have arrived 🌎 Starting today NYC is officially accepting applications to build safe, code-compliant Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) across all 5 boroughs. To help, we’ve launched ADU For You, a new homeowner assistance program making it easier to create legal ADUs in lower-density neighborhoods. This milestone follows the passage of the City of Yes for Housing Opportunity plan, which recognized ADUs as a new housing option in NYC. Check out our full press release: https://lnkd.in/eT6qTv8D

It's a great day to #GetShedsDown! We used every tool at our disposal to compel the owners to remove this years old shed in the Upper West Side. A big win for urban hikers and sunshine enthusiasts alike! “Through an affirmative litigation case brought by our partners at the Law Department, we were able to compel the owners of this property to finally make needed façade repairs and return the valuable sidewalk space in front of the building back to the public,” Buildings Commissioner Jimmy Oddo said. https://lnkd.in/e5jyP4J6
