🌱 Last week, #CZBiohubSF hosted the first annual Bay Area Plant Hub Symposium in partnership with the American Society of Plant Biologists, Leica Microsystems, and Ansa Biotechnologies, Inc. This vibrant event brought together 400+ members of the Bay Area’s plant science community — including researchers from dozens of institutions and biotech companies — for a day of talks, panels, and meaningful connections. It was our biggest public event yet in support of the local scientific community. Organized by Biohub SF Investigator alum Jose Dinneny (Stanford), the symposium also featured a panel with fellow Investigator alum Elizabeth Sattely (Stanford). Using the western clawed frog, or Xenopus tropicalis, as a model organism, CZ Biohub San Francisco Investigator Helen Rankin Willsey is revealing surprising connections between autism and hair-like structures, called cilia, found on the surface of our cells. Her work has led to discoveries linking specific genes to their roles in cellular functioning and, in turn, brain development. Today, Willsey is particularly focused on how such links can help us understand the neurological aspects of profound autism—a subset of autism spectrum disorder that can require constant, life-long care—as well as other health consequences of this condition. A vaccine against dementia? An intriguing new study led by Stanford Medicine’s Pascal Geldsetzer, a CZ Biohub San Francisco Investigator, found that the shingles vaccine can indeed lower the chances of developing dementia by around 20%! In his study just published in Nature, he took advantage of a “natural experiment” in Wales where the shingles vaccine was rolled out based on one’s birth date, which offered an opportunity to study health outcomes in a manner that essentially mimicked a randomized clinical trial. 🔬Bay Area friends: Come to the Exploratorium April 12-13 to check out the Remoscope! CZ Biohub San Francisco engineers will be on hand to give demos and answer questions about their device, which uses machine learning to rapidly diagnose malaria. But wait, there’s more! #CZBiohubSF Investigator Dan Fletcher, a UC Berkeley professor of bioengineering, and members of his lab will demo their NTDscope, a portable microscope for the diagnosis of neglected tropical diseases. Two of the institutes in the CZ Biohub Network – the San Francisco Biohub and the Imaging Institute – will join forces to take on a new grand challenge: to develop groundbreaking imaging technologies to observe, measure, and understand biology like never before. The new Biohub will be led by Scott Fraser (pictured), an expert in biological imaging and current VP of science grant programs at Chan Zuckerberg Initiative. “Since its inception, the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative has made bold, long-term investments in scientific research and technology to advance understanding of human biology,” said Joe DeRisi, president of the CZ Biohub San Francisco. “Having the San Francisco Biohub and the Imaging Institute join together for this grand challenge is a natural fit and is an example of CZI continuing to make big bets in science. “The grand idea here is to reinforce this global surveillance network that we're all striving for. Especially now in post-SARS-CoV-2 times, everyone is talking about: how are we going to generate more data? How are we going to communicate and be on better watch for the next pathogen that might cause a pandemic, and prevent that pandemic?” says Cristina Tato, senior director of the Rapid Response group at CZ Biohub San Francisco. Through a new agreement with The Global Fund, #CZBiohubSF’s Rapid Response team is empowering low- and middle-income countries to use genomics technologies to help detect and respond to infectious disease. Scientists from Burkina Faso traveled to the Biohub’s San Francisco lab recently for hands-on training in metagenomic sequencing and data analysis.
