About us
The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank has been dedicated to ending hunger for more than 30 years. The Food Bank started as a one-day demonstration project on World Food Day in 1981, and to address the needs of hungry families, began permanent operation on October 16, 1982. Originally, the Food Bank was located in a converted movie theater in Steelton. The Food Bank initiated a capital campaign, raising 1.5 million dollars directed to the construction of a brand new warehouse. Then, in 1994, the Food Bank relocated to its current facility in Harrisburg. Mission: Fighting hunger, improving lives, strengthening communities. At the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, we live our mission every day. It is our passion. We truly believe no one should be hungry and we are committed to working harder every day to make that belief a reality. We trust that the healthy food we distribute is an investment in our community, providing hope for families who are trying to build a brighter future and otherwise would lack fuel to succeed. What We Do: Serving 27 counties, the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank is the largest nonprofit food distribution organization in central PA. The Food Bank solicits, inventories and distributes food and other donated products to more than 1000 partner agencies (food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, etc.) directly serving our neighbors in need. The Food Bank distributed more than 50 million nutritious meals through our partner networks over the past year. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank is part of the Feeding America and Feeding Pennsylvania network of food banks.

Hunger Can't Wait. Thank you WGAL 8 TV for launching this fundraiser across our shared coverage area to help the neighbors we serve at a time when they need it most. We are so grateful for your support and for any donation. Just one dollar goes a long way. $25 = 100 meals for neighbors who are hungry. https://lnkd.in/evUezcVq

Did you know that for every meal the charitable food network provides, SNAP provides nine? That is a lot of meals. Many SNAP recipients visit food pantries to stretch to the end of the month - just for a week or so. That is all about to change. Even with a solution, it will take some time to get benefits flowing again. #November #government #policy #foodinsecurity

For every meal provided by the charitable food network SNAP provides NINE. Food Banks are a resource to help the food insecure, but we can't do it alone. Our business community relies on SNAP too. While SNAP is a crucial program in preventing hunger, it also provides an important economic engine that fuels business in all our communities. Every dollar spent on SNAP generates at least $1.50. Thank you, Lieutenant Governor Austin Davis, along with Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding, Deputy Secretary Hoa Pham from The Pennsylvania Department of Human Services, and members of the farming community, particularly Lebanon County's Nell Produce, for visiting today and shining a light on the importance of the program. Our CEO Shila Ulrich and Senior Vice President Tara Davis also spoke at today's press event and tour.

Erin held an important job caring for children. Her work ethic is outmatched only by her resilience. Three bouts of cancer and a double knee replacement left her unable to work. Not getting SNAP will mean hard choices for her. Thank you CBS News for sharing her story. #foodbank #philanthropy

#Health is a major intersecting issue with #hunger. People who live in poverty or face food insecurity are at elevated risk of developing a number of chronic health concerns, including diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease. CPFB's Policy Research team did a deep dive on the prevalence of key diet-related health concerns among pantry visitors in central Pennsylvania. Want to learn more? We have a policy blog for that. Give a read and sign up! https://lnkd.in/ewTcPghH

WellSpan Health is helping to bridge the hunger gap - to the tune of 1,000,000 meals. We are so grateful for their generous donation and leadership in helping to address the hunger crisis in our community in a big way. 🍎
To address the rising risk of food insecurity impacting Central Pennsylvanians, WellSpan has announced a planned contribution to the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank that will equate to 1 million meals in this time of need. WellSpan will step up to meet the growing need that will support local food banks and pantries as Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) funding is set to run out in Central Pennsylvania. “As the region’s leading non-profit health system, we’re committed to the health of the communities we serve, ensuring food is on the table for those in need across Central Pennsylvania,” said Roxanna Gapstur, Ph.D., R.N., president and CEO of WellSpan. “Our mission and our responsibility as a non-profit health system guides this important effort because lifelong wellness starts with the most basic of necessities.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/ek6xH4nM
