We support feminist and gender justice movements to thrive, challenge oppressions and co-create feminist realities

About us

The Association for Women's Rights in Development (AWID) is a global, feminist, membership, movement-support organization. For over 35 years, AWID has been a part of an incredible ecosystem of feminist movements working to achieve gender justice and women’s human rights worldwide. Our Initiatives work at the intersections of the sites of change we work to address, the movements we prioritize, and the tactics we use: Advancing Universal Rights and Justice: We monitor, document and make visible how anti-rights actors are operating and colluding in multilateral spaces and support feminist, women’s rights and gender justice movements and allies to counter their influence and impact. Building Feminist Economies: Working on extractivism, tax justice and corporate accountability, we build knowledge on corporate power and influence; advocate for corporate accountability and equitable distribution of wealth; and amplify feminist proposals for just economies. Resourcing Feminist Movements: We develop accessible, action-oriented analysis on the state of resourcing for feminist movements. We aim to influence funders’ policies and practices, deepen and sustain funding for feminist social change, and support movements’ needs and strategies. Co-Creating Feminist Realities: We unearth, co-create and amplify feminist realities, proposals and narratives and in doing so, contribute to making visible feminism in practice, inspiring exchange and joint action, and providing spaces for strategizing, thus increasing the collective impact and power of feminist alternatives.

  • Addressing the precarity of undervalued gendered labour: A human rights approach The side event will aim to visibilise the precarity of gendered labour, that is undervalued, underpaid, or completely rendered invisible and unwaged, and situate it within the current landscape of the capitalist and neoliberal economic paradigm. It will build on the upcoming report of the UN Working Group on the Discrimination against Women and Girls on gendered dimensions of care and support systems. It will highlight opportunities for the human rights system to address undervalued labour from an intersectional feminist approach through the redefinition, redistribution and revalidation of labour, including unpaid care work. Speakers: Jules Kim, Global Network of Sex Work Projects (NSWP) Haina Lu, UN Working Group on discrimination against women and girls Pooja Badarinath, Sexual Rights Initiative Tsigereda Brihanu, Egna Legna Besidet #HRC59

  • The 59th Human Rights Council Session began on 16 June in Geneva, and feminist activists will be there - because we must hold states accountable for their human rights violations and abuses. In this session, we are uplifting the realities of militarized borders, care work, sex work and the precarity of other forms of undervalued labour. Our solidarity must translate into sustained and visible support for justice and liberation. #HRC59

  • Today, we stand in steadfast solidarity with people across areas affected by conflict, colonial violence and genocide—Palestine, Sudan, South Sudan, Afghanistan, Belarus, Tibet, Congo, Ethiopia, Nigeria, particularly in the Northwest, the Central African Republic, Syria, Kashmir, Ukraine, Haiti. We highlight the reality of our sisters in Myanmar, who sparked the initiative for this global campaign. These women, girls, and LGBTQI+ individuals continue to bear the brunt of militarization, oppression, gender-based violence and sexual violence in conflict.  Join the #RedLipsSpeakTruthToPower campaign and reject the normalization of violence against our bodies and our communities. We demand a cessation of the culture of impunity and violence that knows no borders.
