📌Today at the Catholic University of Chile, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights, and the Catholic University brought together key actors to unpack the drivers, risks, and impacts of corruption in places of detention—particularly for vulnerable groups—in the context of organised crime across Latin America. The discussion also highlighted how corruption heightens the risk of torture and ill-treatment, undermining safeguards and accountability within detention and the criminal systems. 🚨 The conversation highlighted not only the challenges faced by National Preventive Mechanisms (NPMs) and other detention monitors, but also the power of shared experience across the region. 💡 Innovation, legal resilience, and peer learning are shaping a stronger foundation for safer prisons and societies. #TorturePrevention #AntiCorruption #OrganisedCrime #HumanRights #LatinAmerica #DetentionMonitoring #NPM #Chile #APT #RuleOfLaw #PublicSecurity #IADB #CatholicUniversityOfChile

🚨 From Silence to Safety: Addressing Gender‑Based Violence in Detention 🚨 🟣 Women in detention—though a minority in prison populations—face escalating risks of ill-treatment and gender-based violence. This is intensified by poor conditions, stigma, and inadequate legal protection. A critical discussion was co-hosted by APT, UN Human Rights, and Canada's UN Mission, discussing two pivotal reports: • OHCHR’s thematic report on GBV in criminal detention • APT’s global report on women in prison 🔍 Key findings: • Routine use of invasive body searches, isolation, and restraints (even during childbirth) • Structural discrimination targeting pregnant women, LGBTIQ+, older women, migrants, indigenous people, and women with disabilities • Over-reliance on pre-trial detention, with alternatives like legal aid or psychosocial support being underfunded or inaccessible Read more here: https://lnkd.in/eD6Uj7Xk

Great news: the mandate of the UN Independent Expert on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity #IESOGI was renewed for another three years by the UN Human Rights Council! Last month, APT joined other 1,259 civil society organisations from 157 countries to call for this renewal and will continue to work to prevent torture and ill-treatment against LGBTIQ+ persons.
#RenewIESOGI: ✊ We did it! Because we showed up and spoke out, the #IESOGI mandate continues and the voice that fights with and for us at the UN is still here! 🌍 Now and always, we'll continue fighting for each other. The work isn’t over. Let’s keep going. 💪🌈 https://lnkd.in/ewXMPuq3
