High-quality social connections are essential to our mental and physical health and our well-being, with an estimated 1 in 4 older people experiencing social isolation. The effect of social isolation and loneliness on mortality is comparable to that of risk factors–smoking, obesity, and physical inactivity. Social isolation and loneliness are being prioritized as a public health and policy issue worldwide. During the course of the UN Decade of Healthy Ageing (2021-2030), the Demographic Change and Healthy Ageing Unit focuses on social isolation and loneliness. Research suggests that isolation is associated with poorer psychological well-being, pointing out the quarantines imposed during the pandemic. A randomized clinical trial evaluated the effectiveness of different strategies for coping with loneliness and distress during isolation.
