From Holodeck Dreams to Mission Reality: DigitalFish Completes NASA STTR Phase I — Digital twins are becoming the connective tissue of tomorrow’s enterprises, and nowhere will that be more impactful than in space exploration. DigitalFish, in collaboration with Cornell University’s Design + Augmented Intelligence Lab, is delighted to announce the completion of a year long project - USDI-XRED, our NASA-funded Phase I STTR project to extend OpenUSD into interactive, standards-aligned Extended Reality (XR) digital twins. In Phase I we: 🔹 Plotted a path for how OpenUSD can be extended to support XR, interactivity and traceability that industrial immersive twins need but today’s standards lack. 🔹 Built RoleQuorum VR, a lunar rover ops simulator, modeled on NASA’s VIPER mission, to test those concepts in mission-relevant conditions. 🔹 Supported a 72-participant Cornell study exploring how XR twins can improve collaboration and safety in high-stakes decisions. 🔹 Explored how to apply Pixar’s proposed USD Validation Framework to ensure XR scenes run predictably across diverse devices — a necessity for NASA, and for industry. Why does this matter? Because XR digital twins aren’t just for flashy visuals — they’re becoming traceable, interoperable, future-proof infrastructure that can carry a mission, a factory, or an entire enterprise forward. Through our work with NASA, the Alliance for OpenUSD (AOUSD), and AOUSD’s Industrial and Engineering Digital Twins Interest Group (IEDT), DigitalFish is helping shape the standards that will define how organizations build and trust their digital twins for decades to come. Phase I was feasibility. The next chapter is about scaling — for NASA’s Artemis missions, and for industries seeking to align their digital strategies with open, global standards.
