On Tuesday, Nov 4, the Massachusetts #MedTech ecosystem made AI history. Participants with no background in AI - product management, mechanical engineering, software, QA/RA, human factors, strategy - were able to become computer vision / AI capable in a day. Massachusetts is already a healthcare and life sciences hub, but MassMEDIC and Brian Johnson leveraged the Moonshot curriculum - hands-on learning, team-based collaboration, and Harvard Business School-style case-based pedagogy - to upskill the state into a healthcare AI powerhouse. No zoom webinars or 100 hour online courses. In person, off the phones, and focused on learning. In 1 day, participants created physical AI to autonomously guide an endoscopic spine surgical robot to track and avoid critical nerve structures, and help surgeons characterize tumors. All while thinking about AI user needs, regulatory, reimbursement and product development roadmaps. Autonomy and AI are already being actively prioritized by my company Zimmer Biomet and others like Intuitive, but training the non-AI native to experiment with these technologies in an accessible format is going to accelerate the adoption of AI in #medtech and the talent pool to match. Thanks to KPMG for hosting, Cambridge Consultants, Flywheel.io and Roboflow for supporting with AI/imaging technical resources, and Commonwealth of Massachusetts / Commonwealth Corporation for providing training grants to support this initiative. I'm passionate about AI, imaging, and robotics, but what is even more fulfilling is working with MassMEDIC to educate peers to adopt these technologies, so we can all do our part to push for better patient care and streamlined care-delivery through AI.
