Looking for Your Next Step? Tips for Finding a Great Job in Marketing
We’ve been talking about the Great Reshuffle – workers leaving their jobs in record numbers to pursue opportunities elsewhere that are more in line with their values and their goals – for nearly a year now.
If advancing – or starting – your marketing career is motivating you to take that leap, we’ve got the tips for how you can stick the landing.
The Best Marketing Jobs Are Out There for the Taking
People have been encouraged by the Great Reshuffle to seek out new opportunities. The two-fold result is that there are both a lot of openings and a lot of competition.
How has this impacted marketers? LinkedIn internal data shows that there has been a 31% increase in marketers leaving their jobs, with 618,000 job departures in marketing in 2021 alone!
In terms of available opportunities, the good news is that 52% of those who left jobs in marketing left the industry entirely. This same data also shows that 47% of all marketers who stayed in the field made lateral moves, with nearly a quarter opting to move down in seniority for the sake of a career move.
Job hunting tip: Opportunities are outpacing competition. Set up Job Alerts so you don’t miss out.
Employers Are Discovering the Value of Skills
If you’re worried that a non-traditional career path or gaps in your résumé might set you back, we’ve got good news: more employers understand the value of workers who possess the right skills, even if those skills were developed outside of the marketing industry.
Digital skills lead the way
Digital skills are the hottest ticket in town. With more of our daily lives taking place online, brands need marketers who are savvy in the digital space. According to LinkedIn data, some of the fastest-growing occupations are Media Coordinators, Search Managers, and Social Media Coordinators.
Job hunting tip: Read a lot of postings for positions that interest you and see what skills they list in common.
Short on some skills? Take the time to learn them now
Don’t be discouraged if you’re short on one or two skills – you don’t need to stack on a degree to get the job you want. You simply need to demonstrate that you are capable of acquiring new skills and are proactive in learning the skills you need.
We’ve gathered a list of courses that will help you master some of the most in-demand marketing skills.
Job hunting tip: Once you know which skills are in demand for the job you want, search LinkedIn Learning for courses that can help you brush up on these skills or acquire new ones.
Don’t ignore your hard-earned skills
Caregiving, coaching, community involvement – all of the things we do outside of work hours involve skills. Think about what you do in every walk of life and honor the skills you’ve gained through those activities by listing them on your résumé when applying for jobs.
Job hunting tip: Update your LinkedIn profile to include your current skillset.
Imagine Possibilities and Think Big
Employers are just as hungry for new talent as workers are hungry for new jobs. This is the time to dream big and chase the job you’ve always wanted.
Let employers tell you who they are
Employer Brand is a concept that has gained immense popularity in the face of the Great Reshuffle. As employers vie for top talent, they have had to do some introspection and revamping of their brand image to appeal to a more demanding workforce.
An Employer Brand should be authentic and purposeful, with an emphasis on creating an employee experience that motivates. LinkedIn found that 67% of employees say they desire a sense of purpose in their work. If you are one of that 67%, then you will want to look for work with a brand that is wearing its purpose proudly.
Job hunting tip: Search for the LinkedIn profiles of people who work at the company you want to apply to. It’s a good sign if they actively celebrate their workplace!
It’s okay to prioritize your personal life
The appeal of being a digital nomad or a homebody who doesn’t have to deal with a commute both drive demand toward the same thing: remote work opportunities.
The workforce is demanding more flexibility, and employers are responding. Listings for remote marketing positions increased 177% in the first half of 2021 alone. The top remote marketing jobs on LinkedIn are Digital Marketing Specialist, Copywriter, and Digital Marketing Manager.
Job hunting tip: LinkedIn Job Search features an option to filter for in-person, remote, or hybrid positions.
