Yong Zhou's Summary

My 20+ years experience focuses on the design, development, and implementation of power conversions systems. I have expertise working with power flow in both directions. My first 10 years involved adjustable speed motor/drives and motion control; where power typically flows from the grid to the motor. These last 10 years have focused on power flowing from distributed resources to the grid. The products I developed were utility scale power converters for renewable energy such as wind, solar, and fuel cells.

 Develop systematic approach for power conversion systems from modeling, design, simulation, hardware implementation, and experimentation. Not only high level and solid theory knowledge, but also extensive hands-on experience for system trouble shooting, experimental tests, and validation.

 Develop unique system level simulation platform to evaluate different power electronics topologies and to estimate performance under widely changing load or grid conditions. Predict the system behaviors at design stage such as harmonics, IGBT losses, thermal temperature, efficiency, anti-islanding (AI), low voltage ride through, P/Q power control, maximum power point tracking.

 Knowledge of power conversion for renewable energy applications (wind, solar, and fuel cell). Deep understanding of vector control theory and implementation, design of current, voltage, torque, speed, position control loop, and implementation in hardware and power electronics.

 Knowledge of how to model and stabilize the vibration/stability problems of a wind turbine. Hands-on experience in the field making sure the systems work as desired.

 Knowledge of how to evaluate AI algorithms and select critical parameters based on the system simulation platform: develop software, setup lab equipment and experimental procedures, trouble shoot systems, and pass tests.

 Hands on experience with the entire UL1741 test process and CEC efficiency tests for 1 MW solar inverter.
