Digital Elevation Model Technologies and Applications: The DEM Users Manual: Chapter 7: Topographic and Terrestrial Lidar(Link)

American Society of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing
June 2007

Chapter 7 is improved significantly from the 1st edition, especially in describing different laser systems and how they work, modern sensors with very high pulse repetition rates, and explaining what a lidar point cloud is. This 2nd edition includes entirely new sections on lidargrammetry and ground-based lidar (terrestrial laser scanning) for which there are nearly 2000 systems in use worldwide today, providing high resolution scanned images of
infrastructure so detailed that every pixel has its own 3-D coordinate. Many different sample lidar datasets are provided on the DVD included with this 2nd edition, including topographic and terrestrial lidar and fly-throughs.
Figure 6a shows a point cloud from an airborne lidar sensor, color-coding different lidar returns from the trees and ground. Figure 6b shows a terrestrial lidar dataset (terrestrial laser scan) what looks like a photograph, except that every pixel has 3-D coordinates so that as-built measurements are quickly and accurately surveyed.

Simple Method of Measuring Vibration Amplitudes at Better Than Nanometer Sensitivity

Review of Scientific Instruments
December 1988

It is shown that vibrations driven at fixed frequencies of a few kilohertz can be studied, with displacement sensitivities in the nanometer range, by thermally modulating the length of one arm of a Michelson interferometer, and analysing the photomultipler output with a sampling oscilloscope and a spectrum analyser. This method of measurement has the advantage that the high sensitivity can be obtained without a constant temperature enclosure for the interferometer.

Toyota Finds Benefit on Production Line Changes With Laser Scanning(Link)

Time Compression Magazine
May 2005

Two years ago Stephen Brennan, manager of production engineering at Toyota Motor Manufacturing North America, was in the company's California design studio reviewing a clay model of the 2005 Avalon. One of the model variants has a lower-to-the-ground rocker panel, and the project team asked Brennan a sequence of questions all centered on what changes to the production line would be required to manufacture the new model. The issues were clear. What tooling would have to be modified? What new equipment would have to be ordered? The problem was very well defined - Toyota has some of the world's most sophisticated 3D CAD tools, and the geometry of the new Avalon was well documented. Missing was detailed 3D information about the production equipment such as the slat conveyors, sub-lifters and lifters - the equipment that moves the car body and its components down the line for assembly operations...

3D Plant Design Systems: Benefits and Paybacks(Link)

Daratech, Inc.
September 1994

In the summer of 1994, Roger Rittenhouse, then at Intergraph commissioned Daratech to interview users of 3D plant design systems. I spent that summer interviewing piping engineers, IT executives and technical leads at the world's best engineering organizations. I then distilled the information -- this paper was the result. It's hard to believe now but back in 1994, the business case for using 3D was just emerging. Daratech CEO Charles Foundyller gave this paper a careful read before we published it and he deserves much credit for his thoughtful edits.
