I lead Exponent Communications, which provides editorial services, marketing communications and consulting, and training programs for the financial-services industry, B2B companies, professional services firms, non-profit organizations, and educational institutions.

In working with and for my clients, I draw on the insights and skills derived from experiences including:

• co-founding a medical-communications agency that served several of the largest prescription drug brands in the world, and serving as president of its main operating company and as the holding company’s chief strategy officer and chief operating officer;

• helping drive the medical communications agency to more than $10 million in annual revenues, and facilitating its sale first to a business media company and then to a private equity firm;

• working as a newspaper reporter, business magazine editor, blogger, and medical journal publisher (see for my blog posts on international economics);

• devising compelling, cost-effective communications campaigns that met client objectives while speaking to the information needs and interests of audiences ranging from sub-specialty physicians to front-line nurses;

• driving successful sales efforts, RFP responses, bids for preferred-vendor status, and new product introductions;

• interviewing thousands and hiring hundreds of people for positions ranging from entry-level jobs to C-suite roles; and,

• being an active board member for non-profit organizations working in the areas of mental health, higher education, and business ethics.

I am a passionate believer in and practitioner of communication that drives change. Although I tailor my communications and training strategies to each client’s specific needs, I always begin with the same two steps: listening and learning.

    If terrorists entered the U.S. today to conduct a 9/11-scale attack and used the same money-movement methods employed by the hijackers in 2001, it is “possible, but not probable” that their financial activities would bring them to the attention of intelligence and law-enforcement officials.

    That’s the assessment of Dennis M. Lormel, who led the FBI’s Terrorist Financing Operations Section in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks. “It’s possible because there would be transactions, and there’s always the possibility of detection when a transaction trail is there. But with the transaction monitoring that banks do now, they probably would not catch it because the filters would not be set in a way that would raise alarms. In order to do that, you need to have a more pro-active approach,” Lormel told this blog in a recent interview.

    Sovereign wealth funds (SWFs) have made progress in improving their accountability and transparency over the last five years, but more can and should be done. That’s the assessment of Dr. Edwin M. (Ted) Truman, a senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics and former senior Treasury and Federal Reserve official. Truman’s pioneering work on SWF best practices helped shape the dialogue that preceded a working group of 23 countries endorsing voluntary guidelines for SWF operations, the Santiago Principles, in October 2008. In an interview with Tom Garry, Truman shared his appraisal of SWF performance in advance of the anticipated release this summer of a survey of member practices by the International Forum on Sovereign Wealth Funds, as the original working group is now called.
