I knew at the age 12 that I wanted to help people communicate but it wasn't until I was a sophomore in college that I found my calling. Everyone asked me if I wanted to be a counselor (didn't want to do that) or be in media (that would be fun but that was not what I wanted either.) As a young person I saw my friends parents (who were separated) and neighbors and other adults be able to get along anyone but the person they were in conflict with. When I took my first mediation training I found what I had not been able to describe - a facilitative process. "Being a catalyst for the outcomes and potential that reside within each individual and with in the situation or conflict."
I am a mediator because constructive peaceful communication does not just happen it has to be authentically/honestly shared.
Mediating family matters privately or court referred: parental responsibilities (custody), parenting schedules (visitation), financial duty (child support), reorganizing relationships (separation, business partnerships), ending legal relationships (divorce, business partnerships).
