Library Assistant, John Tyler Community College
Richmond, Virginia Area
I'm currently a library assistant with a MLIS helping students at the library of John Tyler Community College. I love my work matching students to information, tracking down information for faculty and staff, streamlining procedures, and troubleshooting technology.
In a past life (before I took a career break to be home with my young family) I worked for years in the computer industry. My position at Techead gave me a great venue for my customer service and organizational skills, while still allowing me exercise my technical and creative sides. In a small company titles are not important; getting the job done IS!
MLIS graduate with 6+ years of hands on library experience. Expertise in emerging technologies, Library 2.0 tools and communications, combined with a strong patron service ethic.

Though the title says Library Assistant, my brave supervisor Helen McKann allows me to do professional-level library work in this paraprofessional position. I've given multiple presentations, created and edited a blog, written a grant, started a podcasting project, and created a series of webcasting tutorials for library instruction. This is all in addition to my normal tasks of helping students with technology and reference questions. Every day has new challenges and loads of variety.

Being active in my community is very important! I volunteered regularly in my child's school library. We worked on everything, from the huge fundraisers and bookfairs to the mundane everyday things like shelving books.

First point of contact for Techead, including welcoming students, registrations, staffing inquiries, and contractor assistance. I handled all on-site training inquiries, conducted needs assessments, coordinated instructors and prepared training price quotes. I maintained multiple classrooms, including 30+ computers and 3 projectors. On the operations side, I did everything from the production of print ads using QuarkXpress, to ordering office supplies, to managing site security! I reported directly to the president; I am flexible and adaptable to see what is needed and get it DONE.
