Background

Summary

In this position I serve a dual role: expanding the talent agency's involvement in the book agenting and publishing fields; and at the helm of Abrams Author Services, expanding the wide range of services I've been providing to my consulting clients, from developing their book content to its maximum potential to navigating the rapidly evolving self-publishing world.

Experience

Director, Book Division

Abrams Artists Agency
– Present (4 years 4 months)

Oversee the growth and development of a book agenting department at this solidly established, bi-coastal talent agency, already prominent in such areas as theater, film and television.

Director, Abrams Author Services

Abrams Artists Agency
– Present (4 years 4 months)

An offshoot of a consulting business I had started prior to joining this bi-coastal talent agency, Abrams Author Services provides full guidance to aspiring authors who are interested in exploring the new and rapidly evolving technologies and platforms to help them bring their work to publication in the best, most appropriately content-specific way.

Former President and Group Publisher, Collins Div.

HarperCollins Publishers
(3 years)

Reorganized the structure and reset the strategic direction of a 100-employee division publishing over 250 books per year across four separate imprints.
Developed an aggressive 5-year Strategic Growth Plan approved by Rupert Murdoch; all steps fulfilled ahead of schedule.
Changed the Division's culture to an open, unified and collaborative team.
Acted as spokesperson and passionate advocate for the industry, with participation in many industry functions and organizations, significantly improving visibility and perception of the Collins Division within the industry.
Negotiated and oversaw an exclusive publishing arrangement with the Wall Street Journal for repurposed and original content in book form.
Renegotiated more favorable terms for an existing publishing agreement with The Smithsonian Institute.

Sr. VP, Publisher

Crown Publishers, Random House
(5 years)

(see below for description.)

Vice President, Editorial Director

Crown
(6 years 1 month)

Developed and implemented strategy to turn around Crown's business.
Oversaw selection of books (those presented by authors and agents as well as the in-house development of book ideas), negotiation of terms, budget allocation for launch, packaging, marketing and publicity campaigns, and inventory status. Worked closely with high-profile authors (see Book List).
Reversed $12 million annual loss in 1996 to profit of $33 million for 2006.
