I started working at Feltex Yarns straight out of School and was taken on under an apprenticeship scheme to be a wool tester working in the Quality Control Laboratory. I completed a 3 yr Textile Certificate whilst working there which involved correspondence study and attending block courses. I spent 6 months working in all areas of the plant and learnt to use all the machinery. I developed an extensive knowledge on chemical treatments and formulations, technology relating to yarn manufacture and preparation, plant and processes and appropriate physical and chemical tests. I also moved on to analysing the XYZ values of wool using a relatively new piece of computer technology at the time.
