Ryan Rechkemmer's Summary

I started investing in stocks in 2005. The experience of numerous successes and failures has solidified my resolve for prudent investing, which I characterize as follows:

• Fundamental focus: considers just those factors relevant to the underlying company’s business, rather than “technicals,” which refers to the superficial information conveyed in past asset prices
• Value orientation: requires investing only in securities that trade at a discount to intrinsic value, which is a security's hypothetical fair price given its fundamentals
• Rational basis: analysis should be centered on facts and logic rather than speculation, thus mandating a consistent application of a fundamental focus and value orientation

I am constantly reflecting on the future implications of economic policy, developments in global financial markets, science and technology, and geopolitical issues. My independent perspective on these topics informs my investment ideas; as such, I maintain a multi-year investment time horizon. My patience fosters a reasonably skeptical and healthy contrarian attitude to many prevailing consensus views. Accordingly, I focus on opportunities for mean reversion in various phenomena, including market expectations and asset prices. I publish my insights via my blog on Economics, Finance, and Investing at <ryanrechkemmer.blogspot.com>.

Curiosity compels me to learn more about the unknown, which has developed into interests in such diverse topics as astronomy and East Asian history. Possessing specialist knowledge within a generalist framework allows me to find unseen patterns, analyze information in new ways, and reach unique and accurate conclusions.
