Richard Fandino’s Summary

As an undergraduate student at Temple University I started working as a research assistant on a project analyzing the CNG channel mutations in cone photoreceptors that lead to total color blindness. During this time I gained expertise on various molecular techniques, western blots, and confocal microscopy. Upon advancement in this field, I felt it necessary to begin seeking training in ecological studies in order to contribute to the understanding of environmental changes on delicate marine ecosystems. In particular understand the biochemical adaptation of intertidal species and/or corals. In this time as a researcher I have developed great interest in the power of scientific research and on the influence of being an academic and mentor to future generations of professionals. As a minority in science I feel it my duty to not only to effectively contribute information to the scientific community but to mentor future minority students with an interest in the biological sciences.
