Motion capture is one of the techniques used in the entertainment industry for character animation. The kinematic patterns of an actor are acquired and the acquired motion is applied to the graphic designed character.
The success of this kind of application is affected by the high level of observer’s experience on humans’ motion. Observers can easily detect incongruities between motion patterns and visual information, and so the choice of a suitable actor to play a specific character might then become fundamental. This choice is of a particular complexity when the graphic character is a product of fantasy, such as a monster or a giant. In those cases a direct correlation between the actor’s anatomical properties and the character’s features is not possible. In order to improve the simulation of human motion for the entertainment industry and other biomechanics applications, it is necessary to investigate what aspects human observers are sensitive to.
