My doctoral thesis examines customer adoption, usage and impact in the context of m-banking transactions in Kenya. There is a specific focus on the low-income segment of the market. The fieldwork took place in two communities. The first is Kibera, an informal settlement on the outskirts of Nairobi. The second is Bukura, a small village in Western Kenya. This thesis will examine and explain remittance patterns between these two communities. It will also make clear how the M-PESA application has altered such patterns.
