Nicolas Otsu's Experience

System Developer

Pallas Informatik A/S

Privately Held; 11-50 employees; Computer Software industry

May 2014June 2014 (2 months)

The student employment in this firm was concluded with the completion of my studies after which I was offered one and a half month's full time project employment within three main working areas, one being system development of the firm's digital board concept by programming in Delphi. Secondly, in connection with a firm strategy workshop I was asked to organise a lecture for the management board on the use of the Business Model Canvas as a tool for business strategy design and planning. Thirdly, I carried through a proof-of-concept test of a 3D hand held scanner by programming in Matlab.

System Developer of Computer Vision Systems

Pallas Informatik A/S

Privately Held; 11-50 employees; Computer Software industry

February 2012May 2014 (2 years 4 months)

During this student employment I was the chief developer of the firm's Matlab based image analytical camera application which was targeted at the health and telemedicine sector. I applied disciplines such as object segmentation, numerical analysis, linear algebra, mathematical optimization, classification and regression analysis as well as spectral analysis. The application that I developed has primarily focused on two dimensional images but the work has also given rise to a complementary research project on the creation of 3D objects from images by use of structure-from-motion and multi-view stereo.

International Counsellor

Technical University of Denmark

Educational Institution; 5001-10,000 employees; Research industry

November 2011January 2012 (3 months) Lyngby

I counselled students at the Technical University of Denmark going abroad to study at foreign universities as well as international students coming to the university.

Student Employee

Nensius Research A/S

Privately Held; 1-10 employees; Biotechnology industry

20082010 (2 years)

The work included management of approximately 2000 scientific article and patent references as well as scientific article search activity. The employment emerged after a Japanese translational assignment in which I functioned as the channel of communication between this biotech firm and a Japanese medicinal firm.

Volunteer

IFMSA

20012004 (3 years)

Nordic National Exchange Officer of the Danish IMCC department with responsibility for development and coordination of preclinical hospital exchange contracts for Danish medical students going abroad within Scandinavia and Scandinavian students coming to Danish hospitals.

Nicolas Otsu's Education

Danmarks Tekniske Universitet

Master's Degree, Mathematical Modelling and Computation

20072014

During my studies, I have acquired valuable hands-on experience within a vast range of image analytical disciplines, including:

❖ Differential Geometry
❖ Markov Random Fields
❖ Texture Analysis, Change Detection and Pattern Recognition
❖ Orthogonal Image Transformations
❖ Statistical and Radiometric Image Analysis
❖ Object Recognition
❖ Active Shape Models
❖ Face Recognition
❖ Structured Light Scanning
❖ Multiple View Camera Geometry
❖ Stereo Vision and Photogrammetry
❖ Volumetric 3D reconstruction

Digital image analysis is computational data analysis and as such, many of the contained numerical disciplines are inherited from fields within scientific computing and optimization. Therefore, they can generally be applied to all data modalities.

Besides the studies I've trained my image analytical skills in an employment in which I developed an automatic object segmentation based image processing application in Matlab targeted for use in the telemedicine sector.

Nicolas Otsu's Projects

  • Master Thesis [Classification of the Anatomy on 3D Scans of Human Heads]

    • 2014 to Present
    Team Members: Nicolas Otsu

I introduced a novel method for computing 3D vertex feature descriptors which I combined with randomized decision forests to automatically classify anatomical regions on 3D scans of human heads.

The academic thesis was done in collaboration with the Danish Blood Donor Study.

  • Bachelor Thesis [Shape Analysis of Brain Structures]

    • 2011 to Present
    Team Members: Nicolas Otsu

In my bachelor thesis I used sparse principal component analysis to investigate the correlation between:

❖ clinically observed parameters such as gait speed, executive motor control, verbal fluency and geriatric depression scale, and
❖ changes in the outline of the brain neural fiber bundle corpus callosum, also known as age-related cerebral white matter changes (ARWMC).

This was a collaboration with the Danish Research Centre for Magnetic Resonance (DRCMR) at Hvidovre Hospital and the Leukoaraiosis And DISability (LADIS) study.
