Mike Donahue's Summary

As a career spectroscopist, my goals are to aid in the development of analytical methods for all branches of chemistry. With work ranging from forensic to pharmaceutical to environmental, I see great potential for instrumentation to enter the field to solve everyday problems normally requiring days and tedious methods. My personal goals are to spearhead this development - and hopefully solve some problems along the way.

Specialties

chemometrics, vibrational spectroscopy, matlab, unscrambler, infrared, Raman, PAT, forensics, history.

Mike Donahue's Experience

Application Scientist

Real-Time Analyzers, Inc.

Privately Held; 11-50 employees; Research industry

January 2008April 2012 (4 years 4 months)

While at Real-Time Analyzer's I have performed measurements on thousands of samples in support of library and model development using chemometric algorithms for prediction and cluster analysis based on spectroscopic techniques. Additional day to day duties included sales support and application development for customers and internal projects.

Privately Held; 11-50 employees; Research industry

January 2008December 2009 (2 years)

As a post-doc I supported the development of Real-Time Analyzer's Portable Fuel Analyzer (PFA). This included chemometric modeling for the prediction of 18 fuel properties from regressions based on ASTM data to Raman spectra measures for those fuels. This successful project is now in Phase III of the SBIR program, with the highly ruggedized PFA a cornerstone of the product line.

Teaching Assistant

University of Rhode Island

Educational Institution; 1001-5000 employees; Higher Education industry

20022007 (5 years) Department of Chemistry, Pastore Chemical Laboratory

Responsibilities included 8 semesters of a teaching assistantship in general, analytical, and instrumental laboratories. Instrumental methods included surveys of data acquisition/signal processing routines, as well as collection with UVVIS, FTIR, GC, NMR, PXRD, HPLC, AA, and analytical procedures for each. During this time I was directly involved with the setup of a computer lab for the aforementioned methods using software platforms such as Matlab to develop programs for analysis. These included basic least squares and culminated in routines for chemometric methods such as principal component regression, applicable to all of the techniques surveyed.

Scientist

Anteon

Public Company; 5001-10,000 employees; ANT; Defense & Space industry

20002001 (1 year)

With Anteon I served as an on-site contractor for the Coast Guard Research & Development Center. My duties there included support in analytical methods for narcotics detection for the vessal search group under Dr. CHih-Wu Su. Highlights from this work included development of a calibration standard for a Gas Chromatograph - Ion Mobility Spectrometer (GC-IMS), the technology used for trace analysis of explosive and illicit drug residues by border and aviation checkpoints.

Scientist

Analysis & Technology

20002001 (1 year)

A&T was purchased by Anteon in 2000, my role there was essentially the same as that listed above for Anteon (on-site contractor for USCG R&DC) under the guidance of Steven Rigdon who is now at SAIC

Mike Donahue's Education

University of Rhode Island

PhD, Analytical Chemistry

20012007

Under the direction of Christopher W. Brown I studied pharmaceutical polymorphism with vibrational and optical spectroscopy. Crystalline forms of various drugs were grown and pseudomixtures yielded calibration sets toward prediction of trace amounts of alternate forms that can change the bioavailability and thus the intended dosage. FTIR, NIR and Raman measurements were qualified and supported by correlations to DSC and PXRD data.

Rhode Island College

BA, Chemistry

19922000
