I am passionate about improving the quality of research software. I enable researchers to ask larger and more complex research questions by improving the software they develop. By teaching and demonstrating fundamental software engineering principles, I assist academic colleagues in producing robust, reproducible, fast and correct software.

I achieve these aims via a number of means:

Consultancy

Outreach
I am the author of http://www.walkingrandomly.com/ - a website focused on mathematics and scientific computing with over 400,000 unique visitors a year. The associated twitter account, @walkingrandomly, has almost 3000 followers.

I am a fellow of the Software Sustainability Institute, an organisation that promotes and supports research software engineering.

Technical support
I lead a team that provides technical support to academic staff and students for a range of scientific software packages and languages.

Education
I have taught programming classes to hundreds of researchers. I use my contacts with education and industry to arrange specialised teaching events relating to research software.

Mentoring
I act as a 'code-coach' to new researchers, providing code reviews and private tutorials.

Vendor liaison
I have strong relationships with several vendors of scientific software including Mathworks, Wolfram Research, Maplesoft and NAG. These relationships have led to many fruitful collaborations between them and staff and students of The University of Manchester.

High Performance Computing
I am part of the team that develops and supports The University of Manchester Condor Pool - a 3000+ CPU core facility made by utilising spare time on hundreds of desktop PCs. In this team, my primary role is to assist researchers in transitioning their workflow from the desktop to the Condor system.

Head of a team providing advanced support for science and engineering applications. Some of our services include

- We provide training and programming assistance to academic colleagues in languages such as MATLAB, Mathematica, Python, C and Fortran.
- We provide code optimization to academics across the University in several languages including MATLAB, Mathematica and Python. We have sped up users' code by over 100 times in some cases.
- MSI repackaging and deployment to over 6000 Windows workstations in cooperation with the University of Manchester Desktop Infrastructure team.
- We liaise with the central High Performance Computing (HPC) team to provide applications support for Manchester's Computational Shared Facility.
- We are part of a faculty team who run a 3000+ core High Throughput Computing (HTC) service.
- We are part of a larger team who runs a set of network license servers for the faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences.
- We provide third line support for the installation and configuration of several specialist applications.
