We believe revealing the truth about how something is made and by who can help us buy better things, both for the environment and for societies, near and far. Making ‘conscious consumerism’ a reality is the mission of Provenance a new startup based at the Open Data Institute in London, UK.

Provenance is a web platform that uses open data to power the exploration of products by their true backstories. We aggregate product data on where things are made, by whom and of what. This provides users the opportunity to search for products made in their area, sort by material, and discover every aspect of its journey.

We are a team of journalists, designers and technologists with a mutual passion for supporting great product design and companies committed to sustainability. Since forming in March 2013 we have been building a beta version of the platform that combines seamless online user experience, cutting edge open data tools, journalism and visual storytelling. Everyday we are expanding our network of makers, suppliers, and consumers ready to be part of Provenance.

Provenance is a service for companies to become transparent, allowing customers to directly support openness and honesty. We aim to rebuild a bond between maker and customer that globalisation has all but eroded, but we believe the Internet can restore.
