Mark A. Cohen is VP for Research and Senior Fellow at Resources for the Future. He also serves as Professor of Management at the Owen Graduate School of Management, Vanderbilt University; Professor of Law at Vanderbilt University Law School; and Honorary Professor, Department of Economics, University of York (UK). Previously, he served as staff economist at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission and the U.S. Sentencing Commission.
Professor Cohen is an expert on government enforcement of policy, having published 85+ articles and books on topics such as: the effect of Community Right to Know laws on firm behavior; why firms reduce toxic chemical emissions; cost-benefit analysis of oil spill regulation and enforcement; does it "pay" to be green?, and judicial sentencing of individuals and firms convicted of corporate crimes. He has served on various governmental advisory panels and was appointed an inaugural member of the Stakeholder Council of the Global Reporting Initiative.
At Vanderbilt, he most recently taught courses to MBA and law students on Corporate Strategies for Environmental and Social Responsibility and the Law and Business of Climate Change. He also co-founded and directed the Vanderbilt Center for Environmental Management Studies (VCEMS).
For over 22 years, as a consulting expert, Professor Cohen has been hired by both plaintiff and defense counsel to testify on a wide range of economic issues in complex litigation, including:
- Damages in personal injury and wrongful death
- Business valuation
- Statistical analysis of discrimination (employment, insurance, loans, etc.)
- Fair Credit Reporting Act violations
- Environmental compliance and penalty issues
- Strategic consulting on issues ranging from marketing, sustainability, and corporate governance
In 2005, he was honored by Money Magazine as a "Class Act of 2004" for his work on racial disparity in the auto lending industry.
