Maria Ní Mhurchú's Experience
January 1999 – Present (15 years 9 months) Dingle, Co. Kerry. Ireland.
I was awarded Gradam na hAmharclainne - a major national award for theatre - for my new play Imithe le Gealaigh. The prize included 2000 euro and a producer to stage my one-hour play which stars Michelle Beamish with performances in Díseart, Dingle, Feothanach Hall, West Cork, Nenagh and The Granary Theatre, Cork as part of the Festival of The Colleges.
The play Imithe le Gealaigh - an hour long play with one character has been recorded by
RTE Radio 1 - Ireland's national radio station and was broadcast in December 2005.
September 1993 – Present (21 years 1 month) Dingle
My first venture into television...I wrote and produced a drama named “An Turas” which was produced by Dovinia and broadcast on TnaG on the 21st January 1997 and again on the 26th January 1997.
I developed and wrote a comedy series of 6 episodes in Irish called “Boghaisíní”, directed by Art Ó Briain and produced by Gerry McGolgan [Crimson Films] and Magma - a Galway based production company - which was commissioned and televised by TG4.
I’ve written episodes for Ros na Rún – a soap-opera on TG4.
Poet / Writer
January 1993 – Present (21 years 9 months) Dingle, Co. Kerry. Ireland
My radio play Na Blípeanna [The Bleeps – based on the lyrics of the rapper 50 Cent] which was commissioned by Radió na Gaeltachta was broadcast in September 2008 in association with AnnOg, a teenage theatre group. We had the first reading of this play in the Dingle Library on March 15th 2008 for Seachtain na Gaeilge.
I was commissioned to write a play in December 2006 site specific to a supermarket in Dingle, my hometown, which I called An Préachán Bán [The White Crow] The play was performed in the supermarket, by AnnOg. I wrote the actual butcher into the play which amazed onlookers and even thought the poor guy was…for the birds…:)
January 2002 – December 2004 (3 years) Dingle, Co. Kerry Ireland
I worked in Díseart 2002-2004 organising festivals and cultural events such as Nuala Ní Dhómhnaill’s launch of her work as Writer in Residence of Díseart and Mons. Pádraig Ó Fiannachta’s book launches. Other events organized by me include art exhibitions and graduation ceremonies. I also succeeded in finding funds for these events and was involved in applying for grants for the upkeep of Díseart through Heritage Grant Aid. I'm still involved with An Díseart.
