Activist & Academic Writer

Freelance

April 2010Present (4 years 6 months) San Diego, CA

As a PhD student my work has been presented at several conferences and I currently have one paper awaiting publication.

As an activist, my work has been published in the anthology Hot & Heavy: Fierce Fat Girls on Life, Love, and Fashion, and I have toured campuses and conferences nationwide with my documentary, The Fat Body (In)visible. I have been interviewed by The Daily Beast, Bitch Magazine, and some of my essays have been republished at thegoodmenproject.com. Between my blog, Twitter, Tumblr, and Facebook, I reach over 5000 followers and readers worldwide.

Communications Specialist

United Domestic Workers of America

June 2013June 2014 (1 year 1 month) Greater San Diego Area

I manage social media and web presence for a labor union representing 65,000 in-home caregivers in California. In six months I have increased our follower count by 30% on Facebook and Twitter, through strategic social media actions and engaging and visually-appealing content. I also coordinate and create content for internal communications materials for our workers, including our quarterly newsletter, blog posts, mailers, and flyers.

As the project manager on our website redesign at udwa.org, I redesigned the site from top to bottom, enhancing usability and content organization and highlighting worker stories and voices. In its first week live, the site had already collected community member email addresses and phone numbers at 9 times the previous weekly average.

My research is primarily concerned with uncovering anti-fat biases in media representations of the fat body and examining the many intersectionalities of fat identity. I am also interested in research on fat activism, the histories of body regulation, articulating fat culture, and fashion.

Student Leadership Coordinator

Carlson Leadership & Public Service Center at University of Washington

November 2006August 2009 (2 years 10 months) Seattle, WA

At the Carlson Center I acted as a liaison between university students, university staff and professors, and community partners to facilitate student internships and community involvement. I led workshops related to the Americorps Students in Service program, managed student databases, and handled the primary Carlson Center email account. I participated in planning major campus-wide events, and designed the marketing materials for the 2008 Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. As a student employee, I created and led the the Early Career Staff at EXP, an organization dedicated to the professionalization and workplace orientation of student staff members, for which I received the Mary Gates Leadership Award in 2009.
