Liesl Copland’s Summary

A fifteen-year entertainment industry veteran, Liesl Copland has focused on the specialty film sector and on democratizing distribution for unique, independently produced projects – most recently experimenting with newer distribution models, the hope, she believes, for the independent film space. Under her tenure as Head of Red Envelope Entertainment, the original content division of Netflix, Liesl oversaw the acquisition, marketing and distribution of nearly 70 films a year and engendered the success of such titles as Julie Delpy’s "Two Days in Paris," Shane Meadows’ BAFTA winner "This is England," Palm D’Or winner and Golden Globe nominee "4 months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days," and such award winning documentaries as Oscar nominee "No End In Sight." Under her tenure at REE the label forged distribution partnerships with Miramax Films, Samuel Goldwyn Films, Magnolia Pictures, Roadside Attractions and IFC Films as well as many boutique labels and new media focused outlets such as B-side Entertainment, seeking to forge new platform models for niche focused independents.

Prior to joining REE, Liesl worked at New York based film financing and sales consultancy firm Cinetic Media where she focusing primarily on film sales and launched their US ancillary business. Liesl has developed a number of fiction and documentary projects as an independent producer and in her earlier days worked for the Tribeca Film Festival as well as the No Borders Co-Production market. Prior to her broader industry focus, Liesl held a number of different production positions including the Head of Development and Creative Affairs post at Counterclock Pictures and as a Production Executive for Los Angeles based independent Mahagonny Pictures. Before entering the film world, Liesl worked in merchandising and design for Gap, Inc. and as an editor for Hearst Magazines. She is a graduate of University of California, Berkley with degrees in both English Literature and Art History.

Netflix is committed to providing consumers with access to the widest variety of films available. With over 100,000 titles, the Netflix catalog spans every major genre, from documentaries and dramas to comedies and how-to. To that end, Red Envelope Entertainment acquired and funded original content projects to increase consumer options and provide an innovative method for film distribution. While giving filmmakers a platform to expose less commercial projects to a broader audience, Red Envelope Entertainment leveraged its proprietary technology to offer the nearly 8.5 million Netflix subscribers unique and original content to which they wouldn’t otherwise have access. This original content initiative creates a national distribution channel for films and entertainment programming otherwise not available to broad audiences. Red Envelope Entertainment operated as a wholly owned subsidiary of Netflix from 2005 until 2008.
